Transcript
00:00 This December, the lowest unemployment rate or the number of unemployed in the country was recorded after almost two decades.
00:09 This is also in front of the government's effort to give quality work to every Filipino.
00:16 Benji Durango in Central Nambalita Live.
00:22 Angelic, the numbers reported by the PSA are good today. Three things were given in their report today.
00:30 The increase in the number of people with jobs, the decrease in the number of unemployed, and the increase in the number of young people with jobs.
00:39 According to the Philippine Statistics Authority, the number of Filipinos without jobs decreased in December 2023.
00:48 From 4.3% or 2.2 million Filipinos without jobs in December 2022, it was recorded at 3.1% in December 2023 or 1.6 million Filipinos.
01:02 This means that the number of Filipinos with jobs in December 2023 increased to 96.9% compared to 95.7% in December 2022.
01:13 The difference is 1.7%. If we count, it is equivalent to 880,000 Filipinos who were added to the number of workers and have a decent income now.
01:24 57.3% of the workers are part of the service sector, 24.4% and 18.3% are in the agriculture and industry sector.
01:35 One of the reasons for the increase in the employment rate is the increase in the demand of workers in these sectors.
01:43 The construction sector is leading, followed by agriculture, accommodation and food service activities, transportation and storage, human health and social work activities.
01:53 Housing is the big contributor here. I understand that our government has big housing projects, so it can be here.
02:03 What's included here is substantial construction of residential buildings.
02:08 Non-residential buildings are included but a number of these would be in the residential side.
02:13 There are more and more youths who have jobs. It increased to 91.8% in November 2023 compared to 90.5% in December 2022.
02:25 Angelique, the survey was conducted between December 8 and December 28, 2023.
02:34 It is based on the 52.13 million Filipinos who are part of the labor force aged 15 years and above.
02:42 Angelique. Okay so Benji, what is the PSA's data on the underemployed or those who need to add hours to their work? Did it increase or decrease?
02:56 Angelique, based on the data I collected, the number of underemployed in our country decreased. The previous 12.6% in December 2022 is now 11.9% based on the survey of December 2023.
03:18 So the number they are writing is good, Angelique.
03:22 Okay. What is the PSA's explanation on the employment rate and it is also noteworthy that the agriculture sector is second in the country to have a big increase?
03:33 You're right. The agriculture sector is second in the country to have a big increase.
03:42 One of the reasons for the PSA is the high demand when they conducted the survey. We know that December is the time when Christmas is.
03:53 This is also one of the reasons for the increase in the employment rate in the agriculture sector.
03:59 But they explained that although there is a seasonal chance of getting a number, the good news is that they expect that this number will be consistent until the first quarter of 2024 based on their observation in the past years, Angelique.
04:19 Okay. So what will be the PSA's next step so that more Filipinos will be given jobs?
04:26 Many are waiting for that answer, Angelique.
04:34 Our administration is giving a deed to open opportunities for high-paying jobs, jobs that will pay well to Filipinos,
04:48 and that will be a big achievement for the government of our countrymen.
04:53 The PSA also added that they will strengthen the so-called social and physical infrastructure investments
05:00 so that the Filipinos will have a better opportunity to find good jobs here in our country.
05:07 Okay. Thank you very much, Benji Dorango.
