Under the hood of Dacia Sandrider is a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine that produces 360 horsepower.

Known for its simple and affordable vehicles for the masses, Dacia announced that it will participate in the Dakar Rally and the World Rally-Raid Championship (W2RC) starting from 2025, in order to redefine its image and enter the world of motor sports. By launching its rival, Sandrider, the brand aims to tackle some of the world's toughest terrain.

Inspired by the 2022 Manifesto concept car, the Romanian brand collaborated with the sports expertise of Groupe Renault and UK-based Prodrive to develop the racing machine specifically for rally raids. Designed with a focus on agility and weight in the Ultimate T1+ category, the prototype is also the most powerful vehicle in Dacia's entire history.

Power comes from a 3.0-liter V6 twin-turbo engine with direct injection that produces 360 horsepower at 5,000 rpm. The mill runs on synthetic fuel, a combination of renewable hydrogen and separated CO2. A six-speed sequential transmission sends power to all four wheels. At each corner are 17-inch aluminum wheels fitted with BF Goodrich 37-inch tires.

Aerodynamics also played a crucial role in the development of the Sandrider; Engineers achieved a 10 percent reduction in drag and a 40 percent reduction in lift compared to similar prototypes. The emphasis on thermal management in extreme conditions has led to the integration of anti-infrared pigments into carbon body panels, introduced as a patented process.

The Sandrider will undergo extensive development testing in various countries before making its motorsport debut at the Rallye du Maroc 2024, part of the World Rally-Raid Championship. Dacia's official W2RC team, Dacia Sandriders, will participate in the first Dakar Rally and other legs of the World Rally-Raid Championship in 2025.

The team has a remarkable roster of experienced and talented drivers. Nine-time World Rally Championship winner Sébastien Loeb will be accompanied by co-driver Fabian Lurquin. Cristina Gutierrez Herrero, a successful cross-country rally driver, and her co-driver Pablo Moreno Huete bring their expertise to the team. Five-time World Cup winner in Cross-Country Rallies and two-time World Rally-Raid Championship winner Nasser Al-Attiyah adds a touch of Dakar legend to the squad.
