WATCH: Office of Transportation Cooperatives (OTC) Chairperson Jesus Ortega and Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board-National Capital Region (LTFRB-NCR) Regional Director Zona Russet Tamayo called as “baseless” reports that commuters would soon need to shell out as much as P50 for a ride in electric jeepneys (e-jeep) under the country’s jeepney modernization program. 00:00 They said 30, 40, 50 pesos in five years.
00:04 There is no basis for that.
00:06 Six years ago, when modernization started,
00:10 a traditional jeep costs 9 pesos minimum fare.
00:15 There was a modern jeep six years ago,
00:19 the price was 11 pesos.
00:22 So there was a two-peso difference between traditional and modern.
00:27 Fast forward six years, last year, 2023,
00:31 the traditional minimum fare was 13 pesos,
00:35 the modern 15 pesos, which is still at present.
00:39 So the two-peso difference between traditional and modern did not change.
00:44 But if you look at the percentage, it went down from 9 to 11, 13 to 15.
00:50 Now, they say that in five years, it will be 30, 40, 50.
00:55 What is the basis for that?
00:57 Nothing.
00:58 The only basis of the fare is about fuel increase, the crude oil.
01:03 And that is a function of the LTFRB.
01:06 It listens to the commuters, the transport sector,
01:10 and it reaches the NEDA, and their decision comes.
01:15 So the basis, or what they say is 50 pesos,
01:19 totally has no basis.
01:21 That is why we have to coordinate with NEDA,
01:24 because we all know that transport costs would have that effect,
01:28 even in terms of inflation.
01:31 That's why we're very careful in determining fares,
01:35 and we have to really seek guidance with NEDA,
01:40 so that we'll have a holistic approach,
01:42 because we can't, from LTFRB, determine everything ourselves.
