Reijo Nygren's Fatal Crash @ Jyväskylän Suurajot 1983 (Aftermath)

Co-driver to Pekka Mällinen in a Ford Escort RS 2000, Reijo Nygren was killed in an accident which happened shortly after midnight on Saturday, 27 August 1983, near the town of Kuhmoinen, some 800 meters from the start of the Special Stage 8 - Pihlajakoski of the 1000 Lakes Rally, then a round of the 1983 World Rally Championship.

The #95 car, entered by Junior Team Finland, driven by Pekka Mällinen violently crashed into a tree on co-driver side. Reijo Nygren, 36-year-old, owner of a building firm, was immediately taken to Jämsä hospital, but he died during transport. An experienced rally co-driver, he scored a class win, 35th place overall in the 1979 edition of the 1000 Lakes Rally, alongside his countryman Pentti Ferm, in a Sunbeam Avenger.

Another accident occurred earlier in the rally almost at the same place, when Mikael Ericsson lost control of the Audi 80 Quattro entered by Team Audi Sweden and crashed. He and his co-driver Rolf Melleroth escaped serious injuries. Winners of the rally were Hannu Mikkola-Arne Hertz in an Audi Quattro.
