00:00 On this day in space.
00:03 On January 4th, 1970, NASA cancelled the Apollo 20 moon mission.
00:08 This came just six months after Apollo 11 astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong
00:12 became the first people to ever set foot on the moon.
00:15 Instead of launching another crew of astronauts to the moon,
00:18 NASA decided to use the Saturn V rocket that was built for Apollo 20
00:21 to launch the Skylab space station instead.
00:24 Budget cuts, along with the nearly fatal disaster that happened with Apollo 13,
00:28 led NASA to eventually cut two more Apollo missions.
00:31 Cancelling these missions also freed up resources for the space shuttle program.
00:35 And that's what happened on this day in space.
