Transcript
00:00 Hello, I'm Captain Joe Dransfield. I'm the Deputy Commander for Pacific Partnership 2023.
00:11 I'm currently embarked in the USS Pearl Harbor. The Royal Navy is privileged to serve as a
00:17 partner on this amazing multinational mission, the largest humanitarian assistance and disaster
00:22 relief preparedness mission in the Indo-Pacific region.
00:29 As we set sail this summer, four ships and more than 1,500 service personnel from seven
00:34 hosts and eight partner nations have contributed to this remarkable mission.
00:39 Pacific Partnership 2023 was graciously invited to conduct missions in Vietnam, the Philippines,
00:45 Malaysia, Samoa, Papua New Guinea, Fiji and Tonga. Disaster emergencies remain an ever-present
00:54 threat to life, security, stability and the prosperity of the region.
01:01 The annual Pacific Partnership mission has brought together personnel across the fields
01:04 of engineering, medical, humanitarian assistance, disaster relief and host nation outreach.
01:13 Working together to develop our ability to respond together to nature's challenges.
01:17 The engineering team have built and refurbished schoolhouses that can also serve as emergency
01:21 shelters and improved access to water and sanitization for thousands of students and
01:25 teachers. Medical and veterinary teams have worked side by side with their counterparts
01:29 to help improve health resilience, medical practices and food security, while also directly
01:34 treating thousands of local community members. Disaster relief specialists have trained alongside
01:39 our host nation specialists to improve our interoperability and ability to respond. We've
01:44 conducted search and rescue training simulating the aftermath of earthquakes and tsunamis.
01:49 We've even worked with our partners in Fiji and Tonga to help replant mangroves along
01:52 coastlines in need of natural protection. And finally our musicians, spiritual teams
01:57 and every sailor, marine, soldier and airman on this mission who've worked tirelessly to
02:01 build and grow friendships, improve trust and make the small differences anywhere we
02:05 can. I've spent time with leaders, ministers, military counterparts, even royalty, sharing
02:11 our gratitude for the opportunity to work together. I've also visited the schools, hospitals,
02:15 bases and barracks to witness the amazing collaboration. On behalf of the Royal Navy
02:21 and the British Detachment to Pacific Partnership 2023, I can say this has been an amazing mission.
02:27 One built on trust, understanding and togetherness. Collectively we're committed to a strong,
02:33 prosperous and free Indo-Pacific region and being as resilient as possible to natural
02:38 disasters is a huge part of that future. We are Pacific Partnership. We prepare in calm
02:44 to respond in crisis.
