Davey Moore defended his WBA light middleweight title against Roberto Duran

Davey Moore was selected to represent the USA in the 1980 Olympics in Moscow, but America boycotted the tournament. Moore turned pro a few months later, and won the WBA light middleweight title in only his ninth bout, stopping Tadashi Mihara in the sixth round of their contest in Japan. Moore made three succesful defences, all inside the distance, against Charlie Weir, Ayub Kalule and Gary Guiden.
Roberto Duran had gone from hero to zero in the space of just five months, when he lost his WBC welterweight belt in a rematch to Sugar Ray Leonard. While it was no disgrace to lose to such a gifted boxer, Duran refused to continue midway through the eighth round. Duran moved up to light middleweight, and after a couple of tune up bouts he challenged WBC light middleweight champion Wilfred Benitez. Duran lost on points. Duran lost his next bout to the talented-but-erratic Kirkland Laing. Just when it seemed his career might be over, Duran beat contenders Jimmy Batten on points and José Cuevas in the fourth round. It was Duran's 32nd birthday, and what might be his final chance to win another world title.
