00:06 I am the writer, director, and lead actor

00:08 of the narrative short "Pathological."

00:10 "Pathological" is a dark comedy

00:12 about a woman who is a pathological liar.

00:15 - I speak Dutch.

00:16 - I thought your boyfriend was a neurosurgeon.

00:17 - Yes.

00:18 - But he also works at NASA.

00:19 - He both, he does both.

00:21 - Who wakes up one day to discover

00:23 her lies have become true.

00:25 - Oh my God!

00:28 - I was inspired to make this film

00:31 after reading this insane New York Times article

00:34 about this seemingly normal, confident guy

00:37 who had ruined his life with pathological lying.

00:41 And what really interested me was that

00:43 there were these psychologists who waited in the article

00:45 who said most pathological liars

00:47 consider themselves to be really boring.

00:50 And they lie because they think

00:52 if they're just honest about who they really are,

00:54 no one would be interested in having them in their life.

00:57 And while I'm not a pathological liar,

00:59 I found that sense of inadequacy

01:01 that pathological lying taps into really relatable.

01:05 I also found that, you know,

01:06 the lies that pathological liars tell

01:09 can often be really funny and entertaining.

01:12 And I just thought it would be an awesome

01:14 filmmaking challenge to bring to life

01:17 these outlandish lies.

01:19 - I know Ariana Grande.

01:20 - Ugh, she's so annoying.

01:22 She's like obsessed with how you smell.

01:23 - I'm so psyched to be at the festival.

01:25 My last narrative short, "Training Wheels,"

01:28 premiered at the festival in 2022,

01:30 but then the festival got shut down 'cause of Omicron.

01:33 So I am so thrilled to be back with this new project

01:36 and really grateful to the Sundance community.
