"The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" goes back in time to follow the 10th annual Hunger Games where a very different District 12 tribute from Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss Everdeen takes to the arena. Rachel Zegler’s Lucy Gray Baird is a natural performer who has a talent for singing. It’s safe to say she’s the “songbird” in the title, but how was the singing accomplished on the set.

When CinemaBlend attended "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" press conference in Los Angeles, Rachel Zegler discussed how singing worked on set.

00:00 It was kind of my choice to sing live on set.
00:02 I had done it before on my first film,
00:04 and I feel really confident in that sphere of performance
00:08 in general.
00:09 That was what I was--
00:11 I kind of came out of the womb doing on stage.
00:13 So getting to do that for my peers and on set for my crew
00:19 and the creative team was something really special
00:21 that I felt like I could bring to the table.
00:24 When you're working on sets like that,
00:25 or when you're even watching movies,
00:27 it kind of takes you out of the world
00:29 when all of a sudden somebody starts lip syncing,
00:32 and it just kind of takes you out of it.
00:33 So I felt really blessed that Francis and Nina trusted
00:37 me to do that.
00:38 And getting to bring that into the acoustics of the Hobb
00:43 or the stage at the Reaping and all of the other places--
00:47 I don't want to spoil that-- that Lucy Gray gets to sing,
00:50 it just adds a completely different tone to the scenes.
00:53 And I felt like it was really, really important,
00:55 not only to me, but also to the character,
00:58 that I would be doing a disservice if I didn't
01:00 perform live every take.
01:02 And it was a lot, and it was very strenuous,
01:05 but I trained to do it, and I felt really, really confident
01:08 with the outcome.
01:09 And I hope audiences do, too.
