When Putin goes to China for the Belt and Road Forum, he brings with him high hopes for making deals.

Moscow's President Vladimir Putin arrived in Beijing on Tuesday. This was one of his first trips outside of Russia since earlier this year, when he was given an international arrest warrant for alleged war crimes.

As Putin got off his jet, which was decorated with the white, blue, and red Russian flag, he was met by Chinese leaders and an honor guard. Before getting into the black vehicle that would take him into the city for a Belt and Road meeting hosted by the Chinese government, he waved at the cameras.

Xi Jinping and Putin are going to meet outside of the meeting while Putin is there. Two days ago, a spokesman for China's foreign ministry stated that the two leaders would talk about "bilateral relations and issues of common interest."

People are paying close attention to how strong these two countries' ties are because China and Russia are promoting a "no limits" relationship that puts them more at odds with the West led by the U.S.

For a long time before the meeting, Putin talked to Chinese state media and said he was "sure" that deals would be made. Among the areas he talked about were energy, airplanes, cars, tech, farming, sports, and more. The Russian leader also praised the rise in oil exports, even though the war in Ukraine has led to sanctions from the West.

A translation from Putin's office says that he said, "We have a wide range of ways to work together, for example in the energy field. It's very diverse." Putin went on, "The same is true for the Power of Siberia gas pipeline." "Now we have good prospects [as] we have already signed an agreement on the Far Eastern route, and one more route, the Power of Siberia 2 that goes through Mongolia, is being worked out."

A post on the social media site X by Jakub Jakobowski, head of the Center for Eastern Studies in Poland, says that executives from Rosneft and Gazprom, two Russian state-owned energy companies, are part of Putin's group in Beijing.
