00:03 The only real unknown heading into the North Coast 500
00:06 was my physical ability
00:09 and where that would take me to mentally.
00:11 Could I go this deep for this long,
00:16 maintain that effort over 516 miles?
00:20 And that's a place I've never been to as an athlete.
00:22 - The North Coast 500 is an iconic route
00:27 circumnavigating the entire North Coast of Scotland.
00:30 From Inverness around the West, North and East Coasts
00:35 via John Oak Roads and then back to Inverness.
00:38 - It is a beautiful route
00:40 around the North Coast of Scotland
00:41 and it is pretty fierce in terms of the terrain.
00:44 This is the spicy bit, heading up into the Northwest.
00:48 - Ultra endurance cyclist Mark Beaumont
00:53 is no stranger to the route,
00:54 having set the previous record back in 2015.
00:57 - I've watched people run it, unicycle it,
01:02 cycle it faster than I did.
01:04 Robbie smashed the record last year,
01:08 took another hour plus off the previous best
01:11 and that's when there was the light bulb moment.
01:13 - He's going back to the North Coast of Scotland
01:16 to try and retake his world record.
01:19 - This is not a slam dunk, this is not a soft record.
01:24 Mark will battle some of the toughest terrain
01:26 in the country as well as the infamous Scottish conditions.
01:31 - I was just so sore on the bike.
01:37 - He's hurting and I cannot do anything but sit and watch.
01:42 - 516 miles in under 29 hours.
01:48 Can Mark Beaumont conquer the North Coast 500?
01:52 (dramatic music)
01:55 - Every minute matters, every moment off the bike matters,
02:02 every choice matters.
