Joel Tadman and Dan Parker talk through some of the best golf gift ideas split into different price brackets if you're looking to buy a present for a friend or family member.
Transcript
00:00 - Buying a gift for a family member or friend who plays golf
00:03 can be a tricky task, especially if you don't play golf.
00:06 So what we've come to do in this video
00:08 is look at some of the best golf gift ideas
00:10 that we think you can get for a family member or a friend.
00:13 I'm here with Joel.
00:14 How are we gonna structure this video
00:16 and how are we gonna present these gifts?
00:17 - So we're gonna break it down
00:18 into three different categories, Dan,
00:20 depending on kind of your budget.
00:21 So 25 pounds and under, then 25 pounds to 75 pounds,
00:26 and then 75 pounds or over,
00:28 if you're feeling especially generous
00:30 to give them an extra special gift.
00:32 So as you can see, we've got a lot of gifts in front of us
00:34 we're gonna talk through,
00:35 and hopefully you'll have some inspiration
00:38 if you are looking to buy a friend or a family member
00:41 a golf gift, maybe for Christmas or another event.
00:44 This is the type of thing you need to consider.
00:46 Right, so now the first category
00:49 within our golf gift ideas video,
00:51 25 pounds and under, I'd say an ideal stocking filler,
00:54 potentially for someone maybe for Christmas.
00:56 What have you gone for within this category?
00:58 You're allowed to pick two.
00:59 - Two, so I've got two gift ideas.
01:00 My first gift idea, which I have two examples of here,
01:03 is a good golf book.
01:04 I got these both for under 25 pounds on Amazon.
01:08 Nice coffee table books, you know,
01:09 decent reads as well, both of them.
01:11 I have read both of them myself.
01:12 And I think a golf present
01:14 needs to be something that's quite useful as well.
01:16 And for under 25 pounds, a stocking filler,
01:18 Secret Santa maybe, I think they'll really appreciate that.
01:21 My second option is here, is this Champkey chipping net.
01:24 I got this for 23.99 on Amazon,
01:27 and it comes with 12 foam golf balls as well.
01:30 So this is great for practicing outdoors
01:32 or indoors with these foam balls, if the weather turns.
01:35 And what's better than a gift of better golf?
01:38 Hopefully the person you give this to
01:39 will get a bit better at chipping while using this.
01:41 And it's a good net as well.
01:42 You can find some flimsy ones on Amazon,
01:45 but I've tried this myself.
01:46 It's a pretty good net.
01:47 - Excellent choice, and my first choice within this category
01:50 kind of ties in quite nicely with your chipping net.
01:52 - It will compliment this lovely, yeah.
01:52 - Absolutely, it's the Golfers Club Chip and Drive.
01:55 That costs 14.99, so basically if you want to practice
01:59 your chipping, but you don't want to take huge divots
02:01 out of your lawn, this is an excellent option.
02:03 It's got a nice kind of artificial grass mat,
02:07 which you can obviously chip off.
02:08 It's quite heavy, which is good.
02:09 It's not going to move around when you're chipping off it.
02:12 It does have a tee as well, so if you have got a bigger net,
02:15 you want to hit driver off it, you can do that.
02:17 So it's pretty versatile, and for 14.99, I think,
02:20 is a good option to save the integrity of your lawn.
02:23 The other option that I've gone for is a Footjoy glove.
02:27 I think a premium leather glove is a gift
02:30 that golfers love to receive.
02:32 They don't necessarily want to buy themselves,
02:33 like to save a bit of money, but it's nice to receive
02:35 a premium glove.
02:36 This Hyperflex one costs 18 pounds, so more towards
02:39 the top-ish end of gloves, but it does give you
02:41 that excellent all-round performance of grip,
02:44 really nice soft feel, a really nice fit as well.
02:47 It's nice and breathable, so if you're looking for
02:49 like a nice premium glove that you want to gift
02:51 to someone else, Footjoy Hyperflex glove
02:53 is an excellent option.
02:55 - Right, Joel, the next category is 25 pounds.
02:57 75 pounds, a gift for someone you obviously quite like.
02:59 This is a decent amount of money to spend.
03:01 So we've got some good ideas here.
03:03 Kick us off with a few.
03:04 - Yeah, I've got three actually.
03:05 I'm breaking rules a little bit, but we could all do
03:07 with more gift ideas, and the first one
03:09 is a golf monthly subscription.
03:11 A shameless plug for golf monthly, but I think you do get
03:14 quite a good value with a golf monthly subscription.
03:16 So you can get three issues for five pounds,
03:20 then every six issues after that is 22 pounds 49.
03:23 So essentially you can get 15 issues of golf monthly
03:26 for just under 50 quid, which I think
03:28 is an excellent present idea.
03:29 - It's a gift that keeps on giving as well.
03:31 - It is, it's everlasting.
03:32 - Everlasting gift.
03:32 - It's almost perpetual in that every month
03:35 it'll just come through your letterbox
03:36 and you get a lot of entertainment from it.
03:39 - Absolutely, oh yeah.
03:39 - That's my first gift idea.
03:41 The second one I would go for is,
03:43 this is a Champ Key golf swing trainer,
03:46 and I think this is one of the best training aids
03:48 you can buy on the market.
03:50 'Cause the benefits, there's so many different benefits
03:52 in terms of, well I think there's four key reasons
03:55 why I think golfers should use this,
03:56 something like this a lot more.
03:57 So the first one, obviously it's a bit of,
03:59 basically it's like a wobbly, heavier
04:01 kind of golf club style training aid.
04:04 And because it's heavier you can warm up with it.
04:06 So if you're like, just when you get to the course
04:08 have a few swings with it, loosen your body,
04:10 your muscles up like that.
04:12 The second benefit of it is that it helps your timing.
04:15 So you can't snatch at the golf ball with this
04:17 because it just won't work properly.
04:19 You have to kind of wait for it.
04:20 So it gives you really good timing in your transition.
04:23 It also helps with your swing plane.
04:24 So if you're a golfer who swings
04:25 and then throws over the top, because it's weighted,
04:29 you'll naturally almost shallow it
04:30 and drop it more on the inside.
04:31 So it gives you a really good kind of feedback
04:34 on your swing plane.
04:35 And the fourth one I think is just tempo.
04:37 It gives you a much better kind of sequencing
04:39 and just a much better tempo,
04:41 helping you get that kind of speed
04:42 at the bottom of the swing,
04:43 rather than having the speed too early in your swing
04:45 where you're throwing the club head and things like that.
04:47 So excellent option, costs 44.99.
04:50 So one of the less expensive versions
04:52 of this type of training that you can buy.
04:54 So we'd thoroughly recommend it.
04:55 I don't know how it would fit in the stocking.
04:57 You'd have a bit of a problem with it.
04:58 - Bit of an issue with the stocking,
04:59 but I think it's one of those things
04:59 that not enough golfers have.
05:01 So I wouldn't worry about whoever you're buying this for
05:02 already having it.
05:03 I think enough people do already.
05:05 And then you just keep it in the golf bag
05:06 with your clubs, carry it around with you as well, I think.
05:08 It's a great option.
05:09 - Very good point.
05:09 And just quickly, my last one would be some PRG head covers.
05:12 So these are some Rider Cup ones I got sent.
05:15 These cost 40 pound each.
05:17 And these were actually the ones
05:18 that the players were actually using at Whistling Straits.
05:21 Obviously you don't have to get
05:22 Rider Cup style head covers.
05:24 PRG do a whole host of different designs.
05:26 But having a novelty head cover,
05:27 something a little bit different, something a bit unique,
05:29 I think just makes your golf bag stand out a little bit more,
05:32 adds a bit of personality to your golf bag.
05:34 And these Rider Cup ones I think are excellent.
05:36 And the quality is really good as well.
05:37 So PRG head covers, that was my final choice, 40 quid.
05:41 What are you going for, Dan, in this price category?
05:43 - I've got the two, stuck to the rules.
05:45 I've gone, this is a pretty basic one to be honest,
05:47 which is a dozen balls.
05:48 I've got the Pro V1X here.
05:50 But again, with the golf glove that you said earlier
05:52 in the slightly cheaper price category,
05:54 it's the kind of thing you don't want to buy for yourself.
05:55 You'd love to get it gifted.
05:57 The Pro V1 and Pro V1X are the best balls on the market.
05:59 I think we're in agreement on that.
06:01 These cost just under 50 pounds, RRP.
06:04 But if it is Christmas,
06:05 you'll see a lot of companies doing deals,
06:07 two for 50 perhaps, to get two dozen balls.
06:09 And a lot of companies will also do personalization,
06:12 often for free as well.
06:13 So you buy the balls, but it's free on top.
06:15 So you can put their initials or a fun message,
06:18 and that's a nice way to personalize a gift at Christmas.
06:21 My second option in the 25 to 75 pound category
06:24 is a polo shirt.
06:25 I've got a nice Footjoy polo shirt here.
06:28 This is 55 pounds, so the top end of a polo,
06:31 but it's a very good one, so it's worth it.
06:33 And again, if it's Christmas,
06:34 often retailers or pro shops will do little bundles.
06:37 And you can't go wrong with clothing, I don't think.
06:39 You can never have too much.
06:41 If you don't quite know what to get them in the clothing,
06:43 I recommend getting a pro shop voucher,
06:45 something to support your local pro,
06:46 and they can go and buy it themselves at their leisure.
06:49 - Well Dan, I would say we've picked
06:50 some excellent gift ideas so far,
06:52 given people a lot of inspiration.
06:54 But before we head into that final premium category,
06:56 let's talk through some of the pitfalls,
06:58 some of the things that golfers,
07:00 or people buying for golfers, should really avoid.
07:03 What would you say are things
07:04 that people should definitely not buy as a golf gift?
07:06 - Yeah, and there's plenty out there
07:08 that you'd want to avoid.
07:09 For me, a novelty golf ball,
07:11 one of the ones that explodes.
07:13 The emoji golf balls, you'll see lots of them.
07:15 You're never actually going to use them.
07:17 It's not really that funny either.
07:19 So I wouldn't go for any kind of novelty golf ball.
07:21 I did mention a proper golf ball is a great gift.
07:24 An accessory set, you can often get nine in one sets,
07:27 with a pitchmark repairer, a ball marker.
07:30 These are obviously often pretty cheap,
07:32 and the person you're buying for
07:33 probably already have a ball marker, a pitchmark repairer.
07:36 So ignore that.
07:37 And the final one for me is a ball retriever.
07:39 Because what are you saying about your mate,
07:41 a family member there, that you need a ball retriever?
07:43 It's not the kind of thing you want in the bag.
07:45 It might save them some money,
07:46 because they might retrieve their ball,
07:47 but I wouldn't want that bought for me personally.
07:48 So those are my three that I would definitely avoid.
07:51 - Good, good shouts.
07:52 Yeah, I mean, for me, I think, again,
07:54 those sorts of really novelty gifts
07:56 are like a golf-related pen set,
07:57 I remember I got once, which was just absolutely shocking.
08:00 Obviously, those mats that you put with on the toilet,
08:03 definitely avoid those sorts of things.
08:05 And the last one would be any sort of golf-themed tie.
08:08 I've seen a few of them online, they're absolutely shocking.
08:10 - Yeah, they're not.
08:11 - You need people, if you play golf,
08:12 you don't really want to shout about it
08:14 at a formal event with a tie.
08:16 So just stuff like that.
08:18 Anything, maybe clothing, if you buy it in the wrong size,
08:20 that's obviously a no-go,
08:21 so make sure you check your size.
08:22 I know you picked your foot, Joyce.
08:23 - That's a good point, yeah.
08:25 - Make sure you go for the right size.
08:27 And avoid anything tacky.
08:28 I think if you're a serious golfer,
08:30 you're not going to want to receive those things.
08:31 But anyway, moving on, let me throw to you first
08:34 to talk through these top price items.
08:37 So something, I would guess, is your partner.
08:39 So there's a lot of ladies watching,
08:41 buying for their partner.
08:42 You know, what sorts of things,
08:43 if you want to splash out, can they invest in?
08:46 - Yeah, this is fun picking this,
08:47 'cause I thought, what would I want to get?
08:49 Quite expensive.
08:50 My first one is the Putt-Out set.
08:52 So what I've got here, this is the premium
08:54 Putt-Out trainer I've got.
08:56 You can get what's called a travel bundle,
08:57 which comes with one of these devices,
08:59 as well as the putting mat and a mirror.
09:01 I think this is great for Christmas.
09:04 For example, Christmas morning,
09:05 it's good fun with everybody to have a go with this.
09:07 And it's the gift you can keep adding to,
09:09 so Putt-Out supply different mirror sets,
09:12 gate alignments, alignment sticks.
09:15 So it's the kind of thing as well
09:16 that you can keep adding to through birthdays,
09:18 through various other holidays that you can give to them.
09:20 So this could give you gift ideas for quite a while.
09:24 So that set there is 99.99.
09:26 My final, or the most expensive one,
09:30 is the Golf Buddy Laser Light.
09:31 Now I think this is the kind of thing
09:32 a lot of golfers aspire to have, a laser.
09:35 This comes in at 129 pounds on Amazon, I believe,
09:38 which is on the low end for a laser.
09:40 But it still does everything a laser needs to do.
09:43 It's accurate within one yard.
09:45 It's got slope on it as well,
09:46 so you can read how high or low the pin is.
09:49 And I think it's a very aspirational gift for a golfer.
09:51 A very good one, comes with a nice carry case as well.
09:54 And I think a very good premium gift.
09:56 So the Golf Buddy Laser Light is my top premium option.
09:59 Joel, what have you gone for in the premium category?
10:01 - So I've broken the rules again,
10:03 and I've picked three gift ideas
10:05 for something a bit extra special.
10:06 So the first one would be Arcos Caddy Sensors.
10:09 So I have them in the tops of my grips.
10:11 You can see here, they just screw in the top.
10:13 And these basically, in the background,
10:15 will track your shot locations,
10:17 and then partnering with the Arcos,
10:19 that'll give you really good insights
10:20 into your performance and how you play,
10:22 where your strengths and weaknesses are.
10:23 So it's a really good gift for a gadget lover
10:25 who is serious about their game, they want to improve.
10:28 This will give them the feedback
10:30 and to allow them to do that.
10:31 It comes in at 169 pounds, 99 for the sensors.
10:34 You can add to it, as you've mentioned,
10:36 with other devices like the Link and other things,
10:38 to make it a bit more easy.
10:39 But that's a really good option to try.
10:42 My second one would be the Garmin Approach S12 watch,
10:46 one of the cheaper GPS watches on the market.
10:49 Really streamlined design, really easy to use,
10:51 gives you all the information you need.
10:54 So if you're looking to gift them
10:55 a distance measuring device,
10:57 that would be definitely one I would recommend.
10:59 And my final gift idea, now this is very much top end
11:03 in terms of premium pricing.
11:05 - I think you'd like this person if you're getting this.
11:07 - You really do.
11:08 - It's a good idea still.
11:09 - Yeah, I mean, you have to like them a lot.
11:10 And if money is no object,
11:11 if you're looking to really treat them,
11:14 I would think about buying them
11:15 a Rapsodo mobile launch monitor.
11:17 It's a growing trend, I would say, in golf
11:21 and with golfers looking to get more feedback on their play.
11:24 It comes in at 549 pounds, so it is a lot of money.
11:28 It pairs with your phone, so essentially,
11:30 it's a mini launch monitor.
11:31 It'll tell you your ball speed, your launch angle,
11:35 and it'll predict your carry distances as well.
11:36 So it's really easy to use.
11:39 I've really enjoyed using it to get that feedback
11:41 on how far you hit your clubs is really important.
11:43 So if you haven't got that,
11:44 would thoroughly recommend giving it a try.
11:46 The Rapsodo mobile launch monitor, 549 pounds.
11:50 So that concludes our look at the golf gift ideas.
11:54 I think we've given, hopefully,
11:55 we've given you some really good ideas
11:57 at different price points to buy
11:59 for your friends and family if you're looking
12:00 for to treat them with something extra special.
12:02 We've got a nice selection of different options here
12:05 to give them something very special.
12:07 What do you reckon, Dan?
12:08 - I think we've done well here.
12:09 I think we've covered all bases.
12:10 Avoid those novelty ones we suggested.
12:12 I think if you avoid them,
12:13 find something here in your price bracket
12:15 or something similar, you'll do a great job.
12:17 - So that's all from us from Burley Park Golf Club
12:19 here in Stanford.
12:20 We'll see you next time.
12:21 (upbeat music)
12:24 (upbeat music)
