Japan aims to lead 6G with support from Toyota and others towards global standards.

In an effort to obtain an early advantage in development, Nikkei has discovered that Toyota Motor, NEC, and other Japanese businesses will join a government-backed organization to propose technology specifications for sixth-generation wireless communications.

6G is anticipated to launch in the 2030s and is expected to be more than 10 times quicker than current fifth-generation wireless. This will allow for the development of services like fully autonomous driving and remote surgery.

The Beyond 5G Promotion Consortium will shortly present a technological proposal, which could be the first of its type. The group consists of organizations including the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications of Japan, as well as Panasonic and other 6G-related businesses and academic institutions.

Taking the lead at this point indicates that Japan is in a strong competitive position, as it is difficult to define particular standards without research and development to give a foundation for the numbers.

Specific specifications for various sectors and applications will be included in the draft. The consortium will demand that businesses all around the world meet agreed goals in order to ensure the security and dependability of 6G communications.

Disruptions in wireless connectivity might cause accidents with self-driving automobiles. The plan aims to restrict mistake rates to no more than 1 per million and lag to roughly 1 millisecond, or less than a tenth of 5G latency, for autonomous driving technologies.

In order to do remote surgery, data speeds in the tens of gigabits per second—more than 10 times what 5G offers—will be required. Applications for entertainment such virtual "metaverses" are expected to require networks that can handle tens to hundreds of gigabits of data per second during peak usage.

The Japanese proposal will be presented at a working group conference in June of the International Telecommunication Union, an organization under the United Nations. By June 2023, the working group aims to define the technical standards for 6G networks. From there, it will work out the specifications for individual applications.
