00:00 More hostages and Palestinian prisoners released as Israel`s truce with Hamas is extended by
00:06 a day, minutes before it was due to expire.
00:10 The European Commission proposes a series of measures to reinforce passengers` rights,
00:15 putting a special focus on the reimbursement of delayed or canceled trips.
00:20 Wars, high interest rates and inflation will cause the global economy to slow down next
00:26 year, according to the OECD.
00:33 More Palestinian prisoners have been welcomed back to the occupied West Bank.
00:37 This latest exchange came before an extended truce deal with Gaza`s Hamas militant group
00:42 was continued for another day, minutes before it was set to expire.
00:46 Thirty individuals were released by the Israeli prison services, 16 minors and 14 women.
00:53 Earlier, 16 Israeli hostages were handed over to the Red Cross.
00:57 Palestinian Islamic Jihad claims to have been part of the handover, apparently confirming
01:01 that not all the 240 hostages seized on the 7th of October are being held by Hamas.
01:07 Israel has also been informed that three hostages, a mother and her two young children, including
01:12 a 10-month-old baby, were killed in an Israeli bombing of Gaza.
01:17 Israel says it`s investigating the claim.
01:20 Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been meeting survivors of the Hamas attack.
01:25 The group crossed the border on the 7th of October, killing 1,200 people in Israel and
01:31 taking about 240 others hostage.
01:34 Netanyahu has pledged to bring back all those abducted.
01:37 Meanwhile, aid agencies fear that if further truce talks fail, the resumption of Israel`s
01:43 attack on Hamas will lead to an even deeper humanitarian crisis among Palestinians.
01:49 Save the Children says it will try to continue providing what it described as basic relief
01:54 aid, bottled water, food and essential medicines, but said it`s not enough.
02:02 Former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger has died at the age of 100.
02:07 The German-born top diplomat who became a U.S. citizen in 1943 died at his home in Connecticut.
02:14 Kissinger served during the Nixon and Ford administrations.
02:18 A controversial figure, he was both vilified and won the Nobel Peace Prize.
02:24 After he left office, he was dogged by critics who argued that he should be called to account
02:29 for his policies on Southeast Asia and support of repressive regimes in Latin America.
02:36 Ukraine`s foreign minister greeted by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
02:43 This second day of the military alliance` gathering in Brussels saw an inaugural meeting of the
02:49 NATO-Ukraine Council.
02:51 Ahead of the talks, Keev said Ukraine needs more weapons for its fight against Russia.
02:56 It will not be an exaggeration to say that defending Europe without Ukraine is a futile
03:02 task.
03:03 You cannot do it simply for one simple reason, because we currently have the strongest and
03:08 the most battle-hardened army in Europe.
03:13 The gathering NATO allies vowed to remain steadfast in a commitment to further step
03:17 up political and practical support to Ukraine.
03:22 Welcome to this first meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Council at the level of foreign ministers.
03:28 We remain unwavering in our commitment to Ukraine.
03:31 We are determined that Ukraine will one day sit at this table as a full member of our
03:37 alliance.
03:39 The meeting also saw the return of former British Prime Minister David Cameron, this
03:42 time as foreign secretary.
03:45 On the ongoing war, Stoltenberg said Ukraine has inflicted heavy losses on Russia.
03:53 Brussels is accusing Poland of not doing enough to put an end to a round-the-clock blockade
03:58 by truckers and farmers on the border with Ukraine.
04:01 For days, thousands of lorries have been stranded in queues, as truckers claim they are losing
04:06 out to Ukrainian companies transporting goods inside the European Union.
04:10 "There is not good faith in finding a solution.
04:15 This is my evaluation today, and it's a nearly complete lack of involvement of Polish authorities.
04:22 And I'm saying that because the Polish authorities are the ones who are supposed to enforce the
04:27 law at that border.
04:30 And while I support the right of people to protest, the entire EU, not to mention Ukraine,
04:36 a country currently at war, cannot be taken hostage by blocking our external borders.
04:43 It's as simple as that."
04:46 Polish truckers started the protest earlier this month, to call on Brussels to force Ukrainian
04:51 counterparts to obtain a permit to enter the block, except for those carrying humanitarian
04:55 aid or military supplies.
04:58 This would be a return to a previous system that was paused after Russia launched its
05:01 full-scale invasion of Ukraine last year.
05:05 They argue that they are losing out to Ukrainian companies that are offering cheaper rates
05:09 to transport goods.
05:10 Meanwhile, Ukrainian drivers have been waiting in their trucks to cross the border, as temperatures
05:14 are now freezing, and many are worried about the situation back home.
05:19 "We have to get along with each other.
05:22 And as soon as possible, because in Ukraine there is war.
05:26 People die every day.
05:28 Business is also important, but normal people die there, people and villages disappear."
05:35 The European Commission says that it is talking to all parties involved to find a solution,
05:39 but also stressed that it could intervene to ensure rules are respected and laws are
05:44 followed.
05:51 Small backpacks, big purses.
05:53 What's actually allowed on a plane?
05:56 Airplane rules change regularly and the lack of common measures often leads to hidden extra
06:01 costs.
06:02 For many people, it's difficult to understand what size items are allowed on board for free,
06:07 which has prompted the European Commission to ask airlines to come up with standard sizes.
06:15 Sometimes it's unclear.
06:16 There is the uncertainty that somebody will stop you and go, "No, you're not allowed that
06:20 bag."
06:21 But if every airline had the same rule, that would be easy.
06:25 The European Parliament asked some months ago for a standardization of airlines' carry-on
06:29 luggage rules.
06:31 But instead of proposing measures by itself, the Commission says it will let the industry
06:35 decide if they provide greater transparency or not.
06:39 "This information should be provided to the traveler from the very beginning to know exactly
06:45 when you buy a ticket, what are you buying actually, what kind of luggage you can bring
06:54 either on board or in the hall.
06:58 This being said, we reserve our right that if nothing will happen in a reasonable amount
07:04 of time, that we will step in."
07:07 On Wednesday, the European Commission proposed a series of measures to reinforce passengers'
07:12 rights legislation and is putting a special focus on the reimbursement of delayed or canceled
07:18 trips, as it's discovered gaps when it comes to intermodal journeys.
07:23 "We've had delays and sometimes it was very quick to settle it and sometimes it took a
07:31 very long time, especially if you have like two flights in a row."
07:36 One way the Commission is trying to solve this is via a standard EU-wide reimbursement
07:41 and compensation form.
07:47 It will also try to help passengers be more aware of their rights, especially if they're
07:51 traveling by different means of transport or if they've booked the trip with an intermediary.
08:01 After cancelling his trip to COP28 in Dubai, Pope Francis greeted the Catholic faithful
08:06 on Wednesday at the Paul VI Audience Hall, but with noticeable breathing difficulties.
08:11 Radio news correspondent Giorgio Arlandi has more from Rome.
08:17 "As I am still not well with this flu and my voice is not good, we will be reading the
08:24 things."
08:25 "After the Council of Doctors told Pope Francis not to start the apostolic journey
08:30 for the next few days in Dubai to participate in the United Nations Conference on Climate
08:37 Change, Pope Francis participated in the General Audience on Wednesday.
08:41 He did not read his speech, he made it to a collaborator and admitted that he himself
08:46 was not yet recovered from the flu that hit him in the last few days and that in fact
08:51 made his voice sound more weak than usual.
08:57 We also know that despite some of his commitments had already been cancelled in the last few
09:03 years, the Vatican confirmed that his health conditions were good, but stationary.
09:11 On Saturday, the Vatican confirmed about these slight symptoms of influenza and on the same
09:17 day, the Pope was subjected to an attack to exclude the risk of lung complications,
09:23 an exam that gave negative results.
09:25 Then on Sunday, the Pope did not recite the Angelus Prayer as usual, he faced the window
09:33 that gives on Piazza San Pietro, he did it in video link.
09:36 In recent months and years, the Pope has had several health problems, it is not the first
09:42 time that he encounters problems with the respiratory tract and last June then the operation
09:50 of the intestine.
09:51 The period that goes from now until Christmas is a period of intense commitments for the
09:57 Pontiff and some of these important.
10:00 Giorgio Arlandi, Euronews, Rome.
10:02 The strain of wars, inflation and high interest rates will cause the global economy to falter
10:11 next year, despite better than expected GDP growth in 2023.
10:16 That's according to the OECD, which predicted the economic growth would slow to 2.7% next
10:21 year down slightly from the expected figure of 2.9% this year, marking the slowest calendar
10:27 year growth since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
10:31 We remain worried about inflation, if inflation were to prove more persistent, further tightening
10:36 would be necessary, pushing growth down further.
10:39 The economies of the 20 countries that use the Euro were hit by high interest rates and
10:43 energy prices after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
10:47 Growth in the Eurozone is predicted to hit 0.9% next year, weak compared to China and
10:53 the United States, but still an improvement from a predicted 0.6% growth this year.
10:58 But the OECD warned that the full impact of interest rates in the Eurozone is still uncertain,
11:03 due in part to the region's high level of bank financing.
11:11 An island around 600 miles south of Tokyo has grown by 50 meters since the start of
11:16 November after volcanic activity.
11:19 According to the Japanese Coast Guard, its eruption reached a height of 200 meters.
11:25 Footage of Nijima Island in Japan's Ogasawara archipelago was captured by drones.
11:31 The Coast Guard said it's monitoring the volcano and will issue navigational warnings
11:36 and other advisories regarding the eruption.
11:39 For now, it's urging caution for vessels navigating close by.
