00:00 When you get a dog that you know has nothing,
00:02 you want to give him everything.
00:04 I am Andrea, and this is Morty's story for GeoMeets.
00:07 Oh my goodness.
00:08 We were told at the shelter he was in North Carolina
00:11 and kept outside on a chain.
00:13 He has a really bad scar on the left side of his neck.
00:15 Permanent reminder of his past.
00:17 Cute.
00:19 See you soon.
00:20 See you soon.
00:21 We wanted a pit bull 'cause we had heard
00:23 that they were loving and loyal,
00:24 and we didn't believe the stigma.
00:26 Hey, what are you doing?
00:28 We knew right away he was the one.
00:30 (dog barking)
00:33 He was slacking in a lot of manners.
00:35 He jumped a lot.
00:36 Hi.
00:39 Morty didn't know how to play with toys.
00:40 He'd shoot up a couple of things in the house.
00:42 Come here.
00:44 It just took training.
00:45 It did take a few months, but that was to be expected.
00:49 He's definitely closer to my husband than he is with me.
00:52 My husband works 24-hour shifts at a fire station.
00:58 Morty knows when he's coming home.
00:59 It's so crazy.
01:00 He'll run from the door to the garage,
01:01 and he'll go out and he'll meet him at the gate,
01:03 and he does the same thing every time.
01:05 His brown eyes will melt your heart.
01:09 His ears are his best feature.
01:11 Aw.
01:12 That's the one thing we get comments on the most.
01:14 Good job.
01:16 They're just big and floppy,
01:17 and they have a mind of their own.
01:19 He's unique.
01:21 If he had to choose between a human friend or a dog friend,
01:23 he would choose the human friend.
01:25 He can be a little funny around other dogs.
01:27 He just loves people.
01:28 Anytime we see someone, whether it's the mail carrier,
01:31 if we're out having coffee,
01:32 anybody that's around, he thinks they're there to see him.
01:35 So he wants to say hi.
01:37 Tail just wagging.
01:38 But he also has different needs.
01:41 In the morning, he wants to do his own thing,
01:44 and he's ready to play for the day.
01:45 In the afternoon, he wants to just kind of chill
01:47 wherever we are.
01:49 And in the evening, he's ready for bed.
01:50 Like, leave me alone.
01:51 I just want to go to sleep and relax.
01:53 We try to pick up on different things he does
01:56 and doesn't like.
01:57 He does not like water.
01:58 He hates the rain.
02:00 Guessing, he was forced to stay outside in the rain.
02:03 He can be very pushy when it comes to food,
02:05 because he is food motivated.
02:07 If we're in the kitchen and we're making something,
02:09 he expects to get something too.
02:11 Unfortunately, we gave him a little too much food.
02:13 So he's been on a diet.
02:14 He got on a prescription dog food in October,
02:17 and he has lost about 10 pounds since then.
02:21 He picks up on our emotions, for sure.
02:24 There are times when I get down
02:25 about the discrimination that we face with his breed.
02:29 And one time it just hit me hard one day
02:31 and I was just sobbing and he got right up in my face.
02:34 It's like, he just knew that I was really upset
02:38 and that made it all better.
02:39 We don't know exactly the environment
02:43 he was in in the beginning, but we know it wasn't good.
02:45 And he went from that to a shelter,
02:49 which we know shelters are chaotic.
02:54 And then he went from that to our home,
02:56 which is new and we're strangers.
02:57 He doesn't know us, but he trusted us
03:00 and he's shown us nothing but love.
03:03 And I'm so grateful that he felt comfortable enough
03:06 to give us a chance.
03:07 I love you.
