The final leg of rescue operations remained halted at the tunnel collapse site, where 41 workers remained trapped, since Wednesday evening. The rescue operation might resume in the afternoon. The iron rods, which became hindrance for drilling work were removed by NDRF. However, the alignment of 800mm steel pipe has bent due to an obstacle. A team of experts has been called from Delhi to correct it.

00:00 The final leg of rescue operations remained halted at the tunnel collapse site where 41
00:10 workers remained trapped since Wednesday evening.
00:13 The rescue operation might resume in the afternoon.
00:16 The iron rods which became hindrance for drilling work were removed by NDRF.
00:20 However, the alignment of 800mm steel pipe has bent due to an obstacle.
00:25 A team of experts has been called from Delhi to correct it.
00:28 Till midnight, less than 12 metres of rock and debris separated the 41 workers trapped
00:33 in the collapsed tunnel in Uttarakhand's Silkyara.
00:36 A US-made drill bored another 6 metres into the hillside.
00:40 Ambulances are kept on standby to take them to a 41-bed makeshift hospital in Chenia,
00:45 Lisar once they are brought out.
00:47 Rescue efforts are slow, complicated by falling debris as well as repeated breakdowns of heavy
00:52 drilling machines.
00:54 Last week, one machine ran into boulders causing drilling to be suspended for over three days
00:59 after the tunnel's roof seemed to crack.
01:02 Both state and central governments promised to do all they could to bring the 41 workers
01:06 back up safely but they have refused to give a definitive timeline for their rescue.
01:11 They noted that these are subject to change due to technical glitches, challenging terrain
01:15 and unforeseen emergencies.
01:17 Five government agencies including the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation were roped into
01:22 this massive effort.
01:23 They were given specific goals including drilling vertically for an alternative escape route.
01:28 In case the route through the main entrance had not worked, blasting and drilling were
01:32 also done from the far end of the unfurnished tunnel, which is nearly half a kilometre long.
01:37 Preparations were also made for a risky vertical shaft directly above.
01:41 Rescuers have already drilled smaller holes to reach the tunnel, which were used to supply
01:45 them with food, water and medicines.
01:47 One of those holes was used to insert a smaller pipe and then to push an endoscopy camera
01:52 nearly 60 metres down to capture the first images of the trapped workers.
01:57 The bloody images showed over a dozen men wearing white and yellow hard hats standing
02:02 in a large, cavernous area.
02:04 Last night, the trapped workers received their first solid food in over a week after rescuers
02:09 packed items like vegetable pulao and slipped it down the smaller pipes, which are about
02:14 six inches wide.
02:15 Till last night, workers had received snack items and fruits like oranges and bananas.
