The 41th Rallye Lyon-Charbonnières, held from Thursday, 02 March 1989, to Saturday, 04 March 1989, was the opening round of the French Second Division Rally Championship. Sadly that event was marred by a fatal accident that happened on its second day.

During the third special stage, called Saint-Forgeux, the Ford Sierra RS Cosworth #53 of Jean-Luc Richner and Gilles Graveleau went out of control while entering a large bend at La Croix de Signy in Villechenève, department of Rhône, France. One oldish spectator was hit and suffered fatal injuries.

The deceased person was Marcel Peillon, 74-year-old, who was treasurer of the Amicale Sportive de St. As Saint Forgeux.
