00:00 Welcome to Tulsa, Oklahoma.
00:03 This is the historic Greenwood District, better known as Black Wall Street.
00:09 I feel pain!
00:10 A thriving African American community once spanning 40 square blocks.
00:15 Greenwood was created because we were excluded.
00:17 Until the massacre of 1921.
00:20 Greenwood was burned to the ground and over 300 people were murdered.
00:25 1,256 homes burned down.
00:29 This history is recent enough that there are still three people who live through it.
00:33 The spirit of Black Wall Street survived.
00:35 And the story of Greenwood is finally being told.
00:39 My family was here for the 1921 race massacre.
00:42 Oh wow.
00:43 They had a house on Lansing Street.
00:45 We've been waiting far too long.
00:50 It's just the pressure.
00:52 We're just trying to do good.
00:54 We're trying to do good.
00:56 100 years later, descendants of that community are building a new legacy.
01:03 We don't have providers of color in Tulsa.
01:06 I'm building a space.
01:08 Doing this by myself has been very challenging.
01:10 And we're here to help.
01:11 How are you?
01:12 How you doing?
01:13 Today is the day.
01:16 Teamwork!
01:18 Our team of designers, builders, and experts are seeking out Black Wall Street descendants.
01:23 This is where my grandfather's business was.
01:25 Entrepreneurs and community leaders.
01:27 There's more to Black history than slavery and the civil rights movement.
01:30 Right.
01:31 To learn about their goals for restoring their community.
01:33 I wanted to be part of the solution.
01:35 To help make a difference.
01:36 And rebuild Black Wall Street one brick at a time.
01:48 This looks really good.
01:50 I have no idea how we're going to get all of this done.
01:53 Hold on, man. This is not the right fridge.
01:55 Oh my God.
01:59 It's time to be celebrating the opening of a Black-owned restaurant in the middle of Reno.
02:10 I'm your host Morris Chespett, and together we are rebuilding Black Wall Street.
