Émile & Philippe Lambert's Fatal Crash @ Rallye Charlemagne 1988 (Aftermath)

The first fatal accident in the history of Rallye Charlemagne, an event held in the French department of Nord, happened during its sixth edition, which was held from Saturday, 05 to Sunday, 06 November 1988. It resulted in the deaths of two spectators.

During the first day of the rally the Renault R5 GT Turbo numeral 35 of Jean-Luc Mercier and co-driver Bailleul went off the road near the small town of Maubeuge. The car collided with a group of spectators and rolled onto its side.

Four spectators suffered injuries, one of them Émile Lambert, aged 61, from Fourmies in Nord department, was dead shortly after admission at Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Lille.

One week later, his son Philippe Lambert, 35-year-old, also from Fourmies, was the second spectator who succumbed to his injuries, on Sunday, 13 November 1988 in the same hospital.

The Rallye Charlemagne was a round of the 1988 French Rallye Championship - Second Division. Winners of the event were Jacques Tasso-Michèle Ranchoux in a Ford Sierra RS Cosworth.
