00:00 three airplanes, the Papa plane, the Mama plane,

00:04 and the Baby plane.

00:06 The Papa plane was a big, powerful male plane.

00:10 (plane engine roaring)

00:13 Mama plane was a middle-sized female plane.

00:17 And the Baby plane was a little boy plane named Pedro.

00:22 Uh, where is Pedro?

00:24 Oh, there he is.

00:26 Maybe someday he'll grow up to be a big plane

00:29 like his father, who carries the mail

00:31 between Chile and Argentina.

00:33 Like all fledglings, Pedro went to ground school

00:39 to learn the ABCs of flight.

00:41 He studied reading, skywriting, and arithmetic.

00:47 He was taught anatomy.

00:50 He also studied history, Pedro, and geography.

00:58 And in geography, he learned the mail route

01:00 between Santiago and Mendoza, over the mighty Andes,

01:04 past Aconcagua, highest mountain in the Western Hemisphere.

01:08 One day, the Papa plane was laid up

01:12 with a cold in his cylinder head.

01:14 So he couldn't fly the mail.

01:19 And the Mama plane couldn't stand the altitude

01:23 because she had high oil pressure.

01:25 So she couldn't fly the mail.

01:28 But the mail must go through.

01:29 I hope.

01:32 - Calling Pedro.

01:35 Ready for flight two to Mendoza.

01:37 - Now remember, Pedro, the Mama plane said,

01:41 stay out of downdraft and keep your muffler on tight.

01:44 - Uh, don't go there, Aconca, Aconca, Aconca!

01:49 - Flight two leaving for Mendoza.

01:57 (dramatic music)

02:00 - Don't wave, Pedro, let her go.

02:03 Give her the gun, boy.

02:07 Gun her, gun her!

02:09 Don't lose your flying speed.

02:11 Hold up, hold up, hold up, look out!

02:14 And so after a masterly takeoff,

02:21 Pedro started on his first assignment,

02:23 to pick up the mail at Mendoza.

02:25 (dramatic music)

02:28 Each and every trip through this pass

02:29 is an adventure in itself.

02:31 At this altitude, you never can tell what--

02:33 (Pedro gasps)

02:34 Downdraft!

02:35 Pulled out of that one all right.

02:40 Handles himself like a veteran.

02:41 His course carried him over the pass of Uspallaca,

02:46 where stands the statue of the Christ of the Andes,

02:49 marking the boundary between Chile and Argentina.

02:52 So far, so good.

02:54 Not a cylinder missing.

02:55 Pedro was flying on top of the world,

02:58 when suddenly, his first view of that towering monarch,

03:02 Aconcagua.

03:03 So this was the big bully they'd warned him about.

03:07 But he didn't scare Pedro, though.

03:11 No sirree.

03:12 Well, the worst is over.

03:20 And from now on, it's clear sailing to Mendoza.

03:23 Come in against the wind, Pedro.

03:26 There's your mail.

03:27 Easy now.

03:28 Atta boy.

03:30 He picked up his mail like a veteran.

03:32 Uh-oh, careful.

03:35 That cargo is precious.

03:37 Pedro was homeward bound and ahead of schedule.

03:40 I'll bet his mother and dad will be proud of him.

03:44 Just a natural born flyer.

03:50 Maybe I shouldn't have mentioned it.

03:52 Look out!

04:03 Hope he got that out of his system.

04:07 Now with good luck and a, uh-oh.

04:09 I was afraid of that.

04:14 Hey, Pedro!

04:15 Come back!

04:17 The little fellow had completely forgotten

04:19 his responsibilities.

04:20 Pedro!

04:21 And suddenly,

04:23 (speaking in foreign language)

04:27 It's rocky snow-filled crags

04:29 formed the base of a leering monster.

04:31 The oil froze in little Pedro's cylinders

04:35 and his motor knocked with fright.

04:36 All those warnings came back to him now.

04:40 The treacherous cross currents, the sudden storms.

04:43 (dramatic music)

04:47 (dramatic music)

04:50 (thunder rumbling)

04:53 (thunder rumbling)

04:57 (dramatic music)

05:00 (glass shattering)

05:18 (dramatic music)

05:21 - Climb above the storm, Pedro!

05:24 Nevermind the mail, let it go, let it go!

05:28 Forget the mail!

05:29 Climb, Pedro, climb!

05:31 Look out!

05:34 Climb, Pedro, climb!

05:39 Get above the storm!

05:42 I know you can make it!

05:43 (dramatic music)

05:47 (thunder rumbling)

05:50 Drop the mail!

05:54 You've got to save yourself!

05:55 More altitude!

05:58 25,000's all you need!

06:00 Up, up!

06:01 Gun your motor!

06:04 Now just a little more and you'll be in the clear!

06:07 Climb, Pedro, climb!

06:08 Good boy, good boy!

06:12 I knew you could make it!

06:14 You're all right now.

06:16 Just level off and head straight to home.

06:18 He's out of gas.

06:21 Pedro!

06:24 Pedro!

06:27 He's gone.

06:31 - Back at the home field,

06:35 Pedro's parents searched the skies in vain.

06:38 They knew that he couldn't have held out this long.

06:41 Their brave little son was gone.

06:44 Another martyr to the mail service.

06:46 Poor little fellow, his first flight.

06:49 It's too bad it had to end this way.

06:54 What is that?

06:56 I wonder if it...

06:58 No, it couldn't be.

07:00 Wait, it is!

07:03 It's Pedro!

07:04 Pedro, Petey boy, are you all right?

07:13 Well, don't ask me how he did it.

07:16 It wasn't exactly a three-point landing,

07:20 but he did fulfill his mission.

07:23 He brought the mail through.

07:25 The mail, that all-important cargo.

07:29 He's thought of it, you know.

07:31 Having a wonderful time, wish you were.

07:33 Well, it might have been important,

07:37 and he did bring in the mail.

07:41 And so the Papa plane, the Mama plane,

07:43 and little Pedro flew happily ever after.

07:46 Sailing eastward from Chile,

07:49 we crossed the Argentine campus.

07:51 Just millions of acres of rich grazing land,

07:56 stretching from the mountains to Buenos Aires,

07:58 the third largest city in the Western Hemisphere.
