00:00 Timor-Leste President Jose Ramos Horta answered some big issues in the world in my exclusive interview with him.
00:09 Including his position on the issue of the territorial strife in the South China Sea and the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas.
00:18 Here is my lesson.
00:24 In the midst of the war between Israel and Hamas, it seems like it is still unclear on how to achieve peace.
00:32 This is what Timor-Leste President and Nobel Peace Prize Award winner Jose Ramos Horta thinks,
00:38 who was exclusively interviewed by GMA Integrated News.
00:41 It's far more difficult now to see how there can be a reconciling of the very extreme opposing views.
00:54 Ramos Horta knows that the root of the war is complicated.
00:58 More than 10,000 people were killed in the region, including 4 Filipinos.
01:04 But in the ongoing war in the past month, the actions of both sides were not acceptable.
01:11 Hamas did what they did, unacceptable, absolutely unacceptable to attack Israeli civilians, children, women, elderly, some people in their kibbutz, in their homes and were massacred.
01:30 That caused Israeli retaliation, a retaliation that was beyond proportion, that destroyed a whole territory, that killed more than 10,000 Palestinians, 80% of which children. Gaza became a cemetery of children.
01:53 Now, he has taken the very extreme actions of Israel.
01:59 We cannot criticize Hamas' aggression, massacre of civilians, without criticizing Israeli bombardment and destruction of Gaza.
02:14 If Israel had any moral, how you say, any moral quality as a victim of Hamas' aggression, it lost it.
02:28 If it had behaved recently, resisting the temptation of an eye for an eye, or 10 eyes for one eye approach, if it had resisted that, yes, Israel would come up with credibility.
02:51 Had they not done what they did, Hamas would have been politically totally destroyed.
02:58 I also asked Timor-Leste President Ramos Orta about the ongoing tension in the territories being occupied by the South China Sea,
03:07 especially after the Chinese have repeatedly and more vigorously harassed not only the Philippines but other Asian countries.
03:17 Timor-Leste has already applied to become a member of ASEAN and he believes that all countries should be united to strengthen their position against China.
03:29 Although the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia and Brunei are loud in their claims against China,
03:36 the other ASEAN members should be careful in their words, as there is no issue in the South China Sea.
03:43 Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, Singapore and Thailand are included.
03:49 China has been more aggressive recently, building structures, harassing vessels, even making sweeping territorial claims with a new map that they've introduced.
03:59 So, as a prospective member of the ASEAN, what would your position be on this issue?
04:05 ASEAN countries first have to stick together, whether those that have the overlapping claims with China or those who are landlocked,
04:18 you have to show solidarity to each other and this is a major issue. So, ASEAN should negotiate as ASEAN.
04:29 It is not impossible to resolve issues in the neighboring countries, like what happened in the territories of Timor-Leste and Australia in 2018.
04:40 It shows how a mature country like Australia, a democracy, does not reject submitting to an international mechanism, whether UN or some other international mechanism to resolve.
04:58 I also asked Ramos Orta about the situation of former congressman Arnulfo Tevez, who was in Timor-Leste to ask for political asylum,
05:06 after being assigned as a mastermind in the assassination of Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo.
05:12 Ramos Orta said that his request for Tevez's asylum has already reached his Supreme Court.
05:19 The application was rejected by our Prosecutor General and then went to our Court of Appeal, which is our Supreme Court,
05:28 and they are following their procedure in Timor-Leste. It is slow, tedious, but knowing what I know,
05:36 I don't think the Court of Appeal will make any decision that is different from the views of the government.
