00:04 The Fat Controller has reopened a branch line.
00:08 It runs along the coast by sandy beaches and seaside towns,
00:12 till it meets the Small Railway at a port to which big ships come.
00:16 As Duck had made friends with the Small Railway engines,
00:19 the Fat Controller asked him to take charge.
00:22 "Your work in the yard has been good," he said kindly.
00:25 "Would you like to have this branch line for your own?"
00:28 "Yes, please, sir," said Duck.
00:31 "Very well," said the Fat Controller.
00:34 "I hope you will work hard and be a credit to me."
00:38 Duck is very proud of his branch line, and he works very hard.
00:42 His two coaches, Alice and Mirabel, are painted in great western colours.
00:46 They take passengers to the Small Railway.
00:49 Duck also has some trucks, in which he hauls away the ballast
00:53 the small engines bring down from their valley.
00:56 The Fat Controller uses this ballast for his railway.
01:00 Duck can't do all the work himself,
01:02 so Donald and Douglas take turns to help him.
01:05 The Fat Controller has built them a shed at the station by the Small Railway.
01:10 Duck felt his responsibility deeply.
01:13 He talked endlessly about it.
01:15 "You don't understand, Donald, how much the Fat Controller relies on me,"
01:20 "Okay," muttered Donald sleepily.
01:23 "Great western and quack, quack, quack."
01:27 "What?" he heard.
01:29 "Quack, quack, you go," said he, "an egg laid,"
01:34 "now, fished and let an engine sleep."
01:37 "Quack yourself," said Duck indignantly.
01:41 He stayed awake, wondering how to pay Donald out.
01:44 At last he said to himself sleepily, "I'll ask Driver in the morning."
01:50 "He says I quack as if I'd laid an egg. Let's pay him out."
01:55 "Quack, do you?" his fireman pondered.
01:58 "I know," he said, and whispered.
02:01 Duck giggled, and his driver slapped his leg in delight.
02:04 "Just right," he said. He dearly loved a joke.
02:08 That night, when Donald was asleep, they popped something into his water tank.
02:14 "We've done it," they whispered to Duck.
02:16 "They won't hurt her, will they?" asked Duck anxiously.
02:20 "Bless you, no. They're both kind men. She'll come to no harm."
02:25 [DUCKS QUACKING]
02:29 A duckling popped out of Donald's tank at the first water stop.
02:33 Both Driver and Farman goggled with surprise, but Donald laughed.
02:37 "Need do to taw who's behind this," he said, and told them what had happened in the shed.
02:43 The duckling was tame. She shared the Driver's and Farman's sandwiches,
02:47 and rode in the tender, quacking at intervals.
02:50 The other engines enjoyed teasing Donald about her.
02:58 Presently, however, she hopped off at a station, and as they couldn't wait to catch her, there she stayed.
03:04 But before they reached home, Donald and his Driver and Farman consulted together and made a plan.
03:12 That night, Donald's Driver and Farman got busy.
03:16 When Duck's crew arrived to look him over in the morning, they found something which made them laugh till they cried.
03:22 "Look, Duck," they said. "Look what was under your bunker. A nest box, with an egg in it."
03:28 Duck peered at it unbelievingly.
03:31 Donald opened a sleepy eye.
03:33 "You dinnae say," he exclaimed.
03:36 "Mind what I said, Duck. You must have laid it this night, all unbe-noontzed."
03:42 Then Duck laughed too.
03:44 "You win, Donald," he said. "It'll take a clever engine to get the better of you."
03:49 The duckling settled at the station, and became a pet with passengers and staff.
03:54 She carefully inspects all parcels and luggage, and sees that the porters stow them properly in the vans.
04:00 When she wants a swim, she flies to a nearby pond, but always returns to welcome the trains.
04:06 She stands by the cab quacking imperiously, till Driver or Farman gives her something to eat.
04:12 Donald is her favourite, and she sometimes allows him to give her rides, but always gets off at her own station.
04:20 The stationmaster calls her Dilly, but to everyone else, she is always Donald's Duck.
