Solar energy is purr-fect solution for vets

Energy costs at Notts veterinary chain Minster Vets are set to drop by more than £15,000 per year as investment in solar photovoltaic panels.

00:00 Hi, I'm Pete Chalkley, I'm the Clinical Director at the Minster Veterinary Centre in Nottinghamshire.

00:15 We've got six sites in total, four of which are fully functioning surgical sites and then

00:20 two where we just do some consulting.

00:22 So this is a project that was started by my boss David Sparks and we looked into the system

00:29 partly on the basis that our electricity usage is just going up and up.

00:33 With veterinary medicine we use a lot of electric for a lot of things that we do.

00:38 It was just trying to see can we on one side keep our costs down where we can and then

00:44 on the other side as we use more electric, we use more of everything, our carbon footprint

00:48 is going up and up and up.

00:50 So just trying to see can we be a little bit greener.

00:52 David got in contact, discussed through our power usage and what we've got at each site.

00:58 We then had people come out and do some site surveys, see what equipment have we got, when

01:02 are we using all of our power and how much of it are we using.

01:05 They then worked out from roof space and things like that available as to what would be best

01:10 for us as a solution.

01:11 So the installation process, all things considered, went pretty smoothly.

01:15 It's a busy place around the vets, it's not easy to just shut things down for a period

01:20 or a day here and there.

01:21 The installation process itself was organised mainly just with us confirming dates rather

01:27 than us having to line anything up.

01:29 Working around scaffolding isn't easy around the vets, we're getting it safely installed

01:33 and things like that, but all of it went pretty well for us there.
