00:17 among
00:18 19 persons who died after their dialysis units of the Colibu teaching hospital closed a stall so our patients
00:26 Over four million cities that we will hear from his wife who says financial constraints
00:31 Forced him to undergo one out of three dialysis sessions
00:35 weekly
00:38 More as the Minister of State other finance ministry says it is unacceptable for Ghanaians with kidney failure to go through what they are
00:46 experiencing
00:48 Believe that when I come back to you on Monday, this will not be an issue for conversation
00:53 Yeah, so we are getting to the weekend. We will see what we can do
00:57 Also president echo for aduan the NPP Council of elders in a closed-door meeting all for aspirin
01:04 Presidential aspirins of the party we are live at the Lisa Hotel for the latest regarding that meeting ahead of Saturday's crucial
01:13 Congress which is set to decide the fate of the party in the lead-up to the 2024 elections
01:20 also chiefs and people of jungle community threatened to boycott political activities and the lead to the
01:26 2024 elections if government fails to complete the
01:30 25.7 kilometer road project which connects the town to the municipal capital
01:35 We have details of all of these flies business force world news and showbiz coming up
01:45 We're also live on Facebook YouTube Instagram and Twitter are joining us on TV. My personal handle is a banana
01:52 I shall please stay for details
01:54 All for aspirins and the NPP flag bearer ship rays are currently locked up in a closed-door meeting
02:11 Well, the highest decision-taking buddy of the party the president an echo for it is also part of this crucial meeting
02:18 Building up to the Congress this weekend Samal and bro for political desk is at the Lisa Hotel
02:24 He joins us for details
02:26 Bora, this is a closed-door meeting and obviously the media has not been allowed to take part. But what have you guarded?
02:33 so far from your sources
02:41 That's been chaired by
02:43 Pac-man, who's watchman the president is also here and the vice president will know obviously he is an aspirin
02:49 So he's also part of the meeting here at Alisa Hotel
02:53 So it is a very crucial meeting ahead of the Congress in in November. That's just this Saturday
02:59 so the main agenda for the meeting is to set out modality and
03:04 We know that has been the convention that before they have a Congress or a conference the National Council and the Council of Elders
03:11 first of all have a conference or a briefing with the aspirin for what ensuring that
03:17 There'll be a peaceful and transparent election. So the main agenda is to hear the concerns of these aspirin and also
03:24 See how they can resolve the issues going forward into the Congress
03:29 Oh
03:29 they say they don't want what witness at the
03:33 Delegate conference to recare a reason they want to engage them
03:37 So they have a proper application of their challenges and then each they can within the shortest time
03:42 Resolve them before they get into a mission
03:45 They will do that that's why the president himself is here with all all the people who matter in the entity
03:51 coming to the path of this all-important meeting with the aspirin so all four aspirin are before the
03:56 The big risk of the NCP and the meeting is currently underway. So it is after this meeting that
04:03 the chairman of the party and his general secretary
04:06 Justin Trudeau come and address the media on the details of the modalities established by this
04:14 from this mission
04:16 I'm a lambura with that detail from the meeting closed-door meeting with all four aspirins for the
04:23 Saturday flag bearership race of the NPP definitely will bring you more from this meeting in a subsequent bulletins
04:30 but let's stick with the NPP because the search for who leads the party is
04:35 Gradually coming to an end with barely two days for the over
04:39 200,000 delegates across the country to make their final decision
04:43 The NPP is in a desperate search for a candidate with a political clout to attract voters in breaking its much
04:50 anticipated eight in
04:53 2024 today at your election on your election headquarters
04:56 Our attention is on that one candidate that has been described by delegates and party big rigs as formidable and
05:04 Capable of leading the party to victory Samuel and were once again
05:08 He defended his party at a time in the country was sitting on political tenterhooks following
05:14 Lawsuit after a 2012 general elections. It displayed intelligence great and honesty before a superior court of justice
05:22 It's what you're doing
05:24 President a coup photo recognized in him a dedicated and principled individual
05:50 Embedding his name among the honest and intelligent men in Ghana's political history is for these reasons that he selected him against all odds
05:58 As his running mate and subsequently the vice president of the Republic
06:03 former mayor of the greater Accra and current member of the Council of States
06:07 Idris Stanley Blankson strongly corroborates the attributes attributed to dr.
06:13 Balmer by the president is willing to go to greater lengths to defend dr.
06:17 Balmer's integrity I have worked with him for a while
06:22 And I can tell you
06:25 If there is a guy little and I said look people call me that I should put my neck there I
06:33 Would I would tell them that if it is for
06:38 According to him dr. Balmer has the endorsements of the Council of elders of the MPP to lead the party
06:46 I can I can say this
06:49 without fear that about
06:52 92% of my colleagues at the Council of State
06:57 supporting a
07:01 prominent figure in Ghanaian politics
07:03 Amma Bami Buzia sister to former Prime Minister dr. K Buzia and a council of elders member also sees in dr.
07:11 Balmer the qualities of a true leader
07:13 Not because he calls me mommy that flatters me but all the qualities because of my brother
07:19 I have a little bit of experience in politics and all the qualities I look in a position
07:25 politician for to me he has it she is so committed to his cause that
07:32 Not even a wheelchair could prevent her from casting a vote in his favor
07:36 They said only so because of my problem. They said we thought we're going to
07:43 Do proxy vote I said no. No, I want to make sure that I put my own
07:48 Thumb on his face
07:52 I'll go
07:55 I know he's going to win
07:58 maybe
08:00 between 85
08:02 To 90 percent. I know he's going to win
08:05 Dr. Balmer is a son of a prominent northern Ghanian politician
08:10 Momoi Bamiya who played a significant role in the formation of the new patriotic party
08:15 Samir who campaign coordinator for dr
08:18 Balmer hopes that the tireless effort by the father of dr
08:22 Balmer and himself to a party rewarded by the delegates in the next few hours
08:26 We should be electing the leader of our party and a potential president of our country
08:31 And I think that the spirit of the NPP made a spirit of our forefathers also be kind to him
08:38 No account of dr. Balmer's political journey is complete without acknowledging the support of his wife
08:44 Second lady Samira Bamiya she has at any given opportunity
08:48 Defended her husband while extolling his qualities that make him the ideal leader for the NPP
08:55 Are we ready for an honest leader?
08:59 Are we ready for a humble leader?
09:02 Are we ready for a hard-working leader?
09:06 Are we ready for a leader who unify us and not divide us?
09:11 Are we ready for a leader who will take us to victory inshallah?
09:17 Java are we ready for 4th November?
09:24 Are we ready for 4th November?
09:26 Dr. Balmer's candidacy has garnered
09:31 widespread endorsements across the country with regional chairpersons
09:36 Leading the charge promising a resounding victory for him. The northern NPP caucus has also thrown its weight behind him
09:43 Dr. Balmer passionately assessed that electing him to lead the NPP in the 2024 general election will be no mistake
09:52 For he brings invaluable experience to the table. I've been to every constituency
09:56 Slept in many many many constituencies and I know the ground
10:02 So as they say follow who know road
10:07 Follow who know road. I know the road
10:12 and
10:14 Not only do I have the experience I have the winning experience
10:21 We need somebody who knows how to win an election
10:25 The political history of the NPP hinges on the Dankwa Buzia Dombo tradition
10:30 The Dankwa and Buzia faction have already been represented by Nana Akufo-Addo and former president John Kufo
10:37 Could it now be the Dombos turn with Dr. Mahmoud Balmer? The ultimate decision rests with delegates at the NPP Congress
10:44 Samuel Mbura, Joy News
10:48 Meanwhile the Ashanti Regional Security Council is warning against the deployment of heavily built men and any other private security services to polling stations
10:57 for Saturday's presidential primary for the NPP
11:00 Personal security of various government officials are also banned from assessing the inner perimeter of the polling stations
11:07 In a press release that Rex said the NPP is not allowed to use the polling station
11:13 but the inner perimeter of the polling stations. In a press release that Rex said
11:17 security of the polls will be the sole responsibility of the state security
11:22 Nana Ojema has a copy of the press release. He joins us with more. Nana, what are the other security measures communicated in this press release?
11:31 Hello Nana, kindly unmute for me
11:41 Nana Ojema
11:43 So I'm asking what the other security measures are that has been communicated in the press release
11:51 There seemed to be a challenge
11:58 with connection with Nana Ojema will definitely bring you more from the press release that has been
12:04 released by the NPP
12:07 The Ashanti Regional Security Council warning against the deployment of heavily built men and other private security
12:14 services to polling stations for Saturday's presidential primary of the NPP. Do we have Nana Ojema back?
12:21 Nana Ojema, if you can hear me, what are the other security measures communicated in the press release?
12:28 So the release issued by the Rex Sec in Ashanti Region is signed by Regional Minister and Head of Rex Sec
12:35 Simon Osei-Mensah. Other security measures communicated in the release include
12:39 one, assigned bodyguards and ministers
12:43 that's assigned bodyguards of ministers and other government appointees banned from the inner perimeter
12:50 They are also not to carry any weapon to the premises itself
12:54 Also motorbikes are not allowed in and around the premises for the election
12:59 Items that have the names and pictures of
13:03 any of the candidates are not allowed in the premises and delegates shall not be allowed to go into the inner perimeter
13:12 with their mobile phones
13:14 Delegates are also advised to exit the polling stations after they cast their ballots and
13:20 the Regional Security Council has
13:25 put it out there that they are going to ensure that these security measures are adhered to to ensure that
13:32 the election in the Ashanti Region is very peaceful. And how does the Security Council intend to ensure the directive is enforced?
13:40 Earlier the police who are part of the Rex Sec
13:44 assured the public that they are prepared for this and they will do everything possible to ensure that
13:50 these directives are followed and also the Rex Sec
13:55 are also expecting all the delegates to strictly adhere to these directives
14:00 They have given the security agencies the authority to deal with any persons who flout these directives
14:07 So the Regional Minister and other members of the Security Council are very very
14:12 working towards that these security arrangements
14:19 are
14:21 ensured at the polling stations.
14:24 Now, Ajima, with those
14:27 details from that press release
14:29 from the Regional Security Council regarding the NPP's
14:34 primaries this weekend, it has emerged that a father of nine and a resident of Kolegon or Kenneth Kwe
14:41 is one of the 19 persons who died within six months after the Kolebu Teaching Hospital closed the doors of
14:48 its renal dialysis unit to outpatients. That's according to the Renal Patients Association of Ghana, Kenneth
14:54 of Ghana. Kenneth's wife, Mariam Bangura, says financial difficulties forced her husband
15:02 to go for one out of the three dialysis sessions
15:06 he was prescribed to undergo weekly. The renal dialysis unit of the Kolebu Teaching Hospital remains closed
15:12 over a four million Sedi debt. The government's promise of settling the debt has not been fulfilled. Listen to Mariam.
15:19 He had kidney failure. It became chronic. He was supposed to go for the dialysis treatment thrice, but he went once.
15:33 His health deteriorated because of that. He became very weak and died later.
15:39 The Kolebu Teaching Hospital closed the doors of its renal dialysis unit to outpatients, so it was inaccessible for him.
15:46 He had to resort to a private facility. He was supposed to do it three times, but he could only do it once.
16:07 46-year-old Gifty Labi, who has kidney failure, told Mark Sholababa, members of the Renal Patients Association,
16:13 it's now a common place for them to discuss who will be the next to die as the condition
16:20 continues to worsen as a result of the closure.
16:23 The most painful one, his name is Charles, but... Tell me about Charles.
16:28 Charles was a very young, vibrant guy, very handsome.
16:33 We sent him to buy food for us. He wouldn't believe he was sick.
16:39 When there was something, he would take care of everything.
16:44 Even if we were there and asked the two of us who would go first, everybody would point to me.
16:50 If you say who would go first, what is that?
16:52 If we were to say who should die, they wouldn't point to him because he's young.
16:57 You freely discuss that?
16:59 Sometimes we do. When we are there, we discuss what happens to us.
17:04 You see death approaching?
17:06 We see death every day. We see.
17:08 How?
17:10 Sometimes, you know, you are there, you may be on the machine, you may not know what will happen.
17:17 Your heart can fail you, you can die.
17:19 It comes with heart and diabetes.
17:22 If you have diabetes, if you have heart problems, it causes your kidneys to spoil.
17:29 So it hasn't been easy. A lot of people, a lot of young guys died within this from May to this day.
17:38 Minister of State, the Finance Minister, Mohamed Amin Adam, says it is unacceptable
17:47 for Ghanaians with kidney failure to go through what they are experiencing.
17:51 He says the government will find a way to deal with the situation before next week.
17:56 It is unacceptable. It is unacceptable that the people of Ghana will go through this.
18:02 Government does not wish that for the people of Ghana.
18:04 But it's a quality, it's an institution which charges fees for its services.
18:08 And therefore we expect that the management will be efficient
18:13 and government will ensure that quality management does its work,
18:17 and does its work properly and efficiently.
18:20 So that's something you would personally want to take up?
18:22 It is something government as a whole must be concerned about,
18:26 and we are concerned about it, and we will act.
18:29 So I believe that when I come back to you on Monday, this will not be an issue for conversation?
18:33 Yeah, so we are getting to the weekend. We will see what we can do.
18:45 Away from that, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration says
18:50 no diplomatic mission of the Republic of Ghana has been attached to defray the cost of a judgment debt.
18:56 The reaction comes in the wake of reports that peculiar multinational firm Trafigura
19:01 is moving to seize and auction some properties belonging to Ghana in the UK.
19:06 The Ghana International Bank building and other properties are at risk of being sold
19:11 to defray a $140 million judgment debt awarded to Trafigura.
19:17 However, speaking in a yet-to-be-aired interview on Foreign Affairs,
19:21 Ghana's ambassador at large and special adviser to the Minister for Foreign Affairs Kwabeno Seyed Dankwa
19:27 says the issue will be resolved.
19:29 This issue of a judgment debt, my understanding, and I think our High Commissioner in London
19:40 spoke about it, no diplomatic property is at risk or is being attached.
19:48 There is a property belonging to probably a state entity or the state which may be at risk.
20:06 But even that is being addressed.
20:11 So what you mean to say is you hide under the Vienna Conventions and simply protect these assets?
20:15 We're not hiding under anything. I'm just saying...
20:18 That's what you intend to do, clearly.
20:20 No, no, no. There has been no... and I'm just quoting the High Commissioner because he's there.
20:28 And I'm saying there has been no indication at all that our diplomatic properties in the UK are at risk.
20:39 There is a building that is in contention, but even that is being addressed by the state.
20:48 How is it being addressed? Are we working to secure it or to make payments so that the assets are not frozen?
20:54 But these assets belong to the Republic of Ghana, isn't it?
20:57 Yes, but this is an issue for the Attorney General and the Minister for Justice because, as you can tell,
21:10 this is a dispute between the state and a private entity.
21:18 And what I know is that assurances have been given that it will be dealt with.
21:30 Meanwhile, Ghana's reciprocal visa waiver agreement has finally set into motion.
21:38 Per the Memorandum of Understanding between Ghana and South Africa,
21:42 nationals from both countries have the opportunity to travel to each other's country for up to 90 days within a year.
21:49 Touching on the latest framework, Ambassador Kwabeno Seyedankwa says
21:53 that decision is in respect of fulfilling Ghana's commitment to the African Union's protocol on the free movement of people.
22:02 Both governments are invested in it.
22:07 This is something that has been worked on for some time.
22:11 There's enthusiasm for it.
22:13 I tell you, one of the reasons why it was possible, apart from the fact that we maintain the highest possible relationship with South Africa,
22:32 is that, and from what I hear, in South Africa, for instance, the reason why other African countries do not have this facility and we do,
22:44 is that there is a perception of Ghanians which is positive.
22:53 Whether it's our business people, whether it's our professionals, whether it's our citizens going there,
23:01 the way they have conducted themselves has been very helpful.
23:07 Now, don't forget, and I know that the president of Kenya announced yesterday that by the end of this year they're going to do...
23:19 Yes, December.
23:21 Yes. The African Union has a free movement protocol which so far has been signed by 33 countries.
23:33 Only four countries have ratified it and it requires 15 ratifications to come into force.
23:42 The reason why the African Union came up with the protocol is that it is, if we want to promote inter-African trade, promote trade and investments...
23:59 Away from that, the opening of the Lagoon floodgates and the sandbar at Azizaji has commenced to allow the free flow of the lagoon into the sea,
24:09 mitigating the devastating flooding in the three municipalities of Keta and Mlonga in Keto South.
24:15 Checks by Joy News reveals the process which began a week ago has been successful in making it possible for the floodwaters in the three municipalities
24:25 and even in the three not-home districts to recede considerably.
24:29 Ivy Setoji and her team returned to Azizaji in the Keta municipality and has filed this report.
24:35 This is the opening of the floodgates here in Azizaji to enable the water or the lagoon to flow easily to the sea.
24:49 With this opening of the floodgates, it's also making it easy for the waters in the three not-home districts and some other districts that experienced the flooding due to the coastal dam spillage to recede.
25:06 So, waters in those areas are receding as we speak due to the opening of this floodgate.
25:15 Now, some people in this area were not happy about the issue.
25:21 Some went to demonstration, some agitated that they were not so happy about it because of the past experience.
25:29 Something years ago, a lot of people were drowned due to this particular issue.
25:36 It happened before where the floodgates were open and some people were drowned.
25:41 The question here is, are they now satisfied?
25:45 Are people still interested in this issue?
25:49 We'll be speaking with the emcee for Keta, Emmanuel Giamiga.
25:53 Now, everything is calm.
25:57 We can see that we are achieving our purpose for opening the floodgates as well as cutting the sandbar between the sea and the lagoon.
26:11 We can see that there's a rush of the lagoon water into the sea.
26:18 I'm a happy man, as we speak now.
26:22 So, residents are hoping that what happened in the past will not be repeated or will not happen here.
26:29 I'm very much impressed that the water is going straight.
26:35 Nobody can go inside now.
26:38 So, I have to thank our DC for forcing the community to allow this gate to be open.
26:45 We are here this afternoon to erect caution tape here to prevent our members from going near the sea.
26:55 Because, when we are here in the morning, we have observed that the sandbar is curving in.
27:01 So, as people are going to the edge of the sandbar, they can fall into it at any given time and it will be a problem for the assembly and for our community.
27:13 We are watching keenly. We'll give you every detailed report as we started two weeks ago.
27:19 We'll give you more reports as it progresses.
27:22 From Azizaji, my name is Ivy Setoji.
27:26 For joining us.
27:27 From Azizaji to the West Mamprousi municipality, because the chiefs and people of Janga and that municipality of the northeast region
27:38 have threatened to boycott all political activities ahead of the 2024 elections,
27:43 the government fails to complete the Nasir Janga road that connects the town to the municipal capital.
27:50 The paramount chief of the area, Sonabanan Thomas Seidu, and his elders are therefore calling on the president to redeem the promise he made to them
27:59 during the sword cutting ceremony for the commencement of the 25.7 km road project.
28:06 The 25.7 Janga-Nasir road project in the West Mamprousi municipality was ongoing until the change of government in 2016.
28:14 The project was swiftly abrogated and re-awarded by the Akufo-Addo administration.
28:19 In 2018, the president himself came to cut sword for the recommencement of work by the new contractor, Atadeba in Nasir,
28:26 attended by the chiefs and people of the area.
28:28 President Akufo-Addo promised them the road project would be completed before the 2020 elections.
28:34 So how long are they going to take?
28:36 24 months.
28:38 From now?
28:39 From now.
28:40 So by 2020, around this time, the work should be completed.
28:44 Six years down the lane, the contractor has abandoned the project due to non-payments.
28:49 Surprisingly, however, the contractor was made to tie a 6 km stretch of the road from Nasir to Nakwaiili village
28:57 and another 1 km to the Janga town, leaving out a large stretch of 18.7 km of the road in a very deplorable state.
29:05 The residents say they see it as an attempt to conceal the failure to fix the road.
29:09 Some commercial drivers express the challenges they face doing business on the road.
29:14 We are facing a lot of suffering on the road.
29:21 The rains have created large potholes which are causing our vehicles to break down and hinder the movement of goods and services.
29:29 We are worried because the contractor has abandoned the project.
29:32 The project, upon completion, would have opened up and improved access to essential public services
29:38 and increased livelihood opportunities in several communities in the Janga zone.
29:42 Residents of communities along the road have complained that the poor state of the road is affecting their socioeconomic activities,
29:49 whilst others bemoan the negative impact of the bad nature of the road on their farming and trading activities.
29:55 The paramount chief of the area, Sona Abasidu Nantogma, is displeased about the deplorable state of the road.
30:02 Now it's ghetto west. The road, they didn't say what they call us, anything on the road.
30:09 Before you get to Nasir, you spend about so many hours on the road, you can't go.
30:16 Our market, cars, some of them are having an accident on the way.
30:22 Most of the cars have got an accident because of the road potholes.
30:28 The chief also described as shameful the failure of the president to fulfil his promise to ensure the completion of the road by 2020.
30:36 Because the president of the whole country come and cut the shore for some place to do, and it doesn't work.
30:42 It's a shame. And here is the strong place that he used to help them to win the Wali-Wali seat.
30:50 So all the boys are telling me to deny. This year they will deny it.
30:55 Ilias Sutanku reporting for JOY News.
30:58 The resilience of Lake Busumche, the biggest natural lake in West Africa, is at risk of climate change and other human activities,
31:09 according to research by scientists from the University of Energy and Natural Resources.
31:14 Based on the 1986 baseline study, the research discovered a sharp decline in water levels,
31:21 reduction in size of the lake and decline in fish population.
31:25 In this special feature, my colleague Ohementere reports residents along the lake are worried over the findings of the research
31:33 and want immediate actions to save the lake.
31:37 Believed to have been formed by a falling meteorite, Lake Busumche measures about 8 km in diameter,
31:46 covering a surface area of about 52 km.
31:50 The lake has since 1.2 million years ago seen its depth decrease from 800 m to 78 m maximum.
32:00 Currently, with the surface area reduced from 52 km in 1986 to 46 km in 2020,
32:09 fish stock has over the years reduced, resulting in few catches for communities along the lake whose mainstay is fishing.
32:18 The development has forced many residents to divert to crop farming, which involves clearing the lake's forest cover.
32:27 The use of weedicides and pesticides also pollutes the lake's environment.
32:33 77-year-old Patrick Elliot Ofosu is one of the worried residents,
32:39 seeking answers to the warming and shrinking of Lake Busumche.
32:44 Some years back, about 25 years ago, the whole of this area was part of the lake.
32:54 So, as we see it for ourselves, the lake is going back, it's receding.
33:02 This used to be the landing area for bulls plowing on the Lake Busumche.
33:08 But with time, the water has receded, leaving this natural land in between the landing area and the lake.
33:20 Sediments, including organic matter and salt associated with human activities and erosion,
33:27 are said to have built up underneath the biggest natural lake in West Africa.
33:32 Dubbed "Building Resilience of Lake Busumche to Climate Change",
33:37 scientists from the University of Energy and Natural Resources,
33:41 in partnership with their overseas counterparts from three institutions,
33:45 are seeking to build the lake's resilience.
33:48 We don't know the current and the future consequences of this for the people
33:52 and also for the lake itself as a biosphere reserve.
33:55 So that is the reason why Relab came in, to understand to what extent climate is having an impact on the lake
34:04 and the lives of the people, and how the people are also responding to the changes
34:09 and what are the consequences of that response.
34:13 The research...
34:15 Well, information reaching Joy News indicates a colubrinal dialysis unit has been opened.
34:28 This is according to the Ministry of Health.
34:31 We're trying to raise a public relations officer, Isaac Ofe-Ban, who will be telling us more about this.
34:38 Definitely, when we return from the business break, we'll hear more on this developing story.
34:44 He will be taking care of everything.
34:49 Hello and welcome to the business segment on Joy News today.
35:00 My name is Emma Davis.
35:02 Care Corporation has signed a memorandum of understanding with Rana Motors to offer technical and skills development training
35:10 for its workers and other players in the automotive industry.
35:14 The two-year training program, which will be executed by the West African Vehicle Academy,
35:19 will offer employees the environment to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in the automotive industry.
35:26 Here's more.
35:27 The training program, which has been carried out by the West African Vehicle Academy,
35:32 will offer several technicians and trainers from service partners and other car makers
35:37 both theoretical and practical application on workshop floor, classroom and hands-on training
35:42 on the use of state-of-the-art diagnostics equipment and software.
35:47 Addressing journalists at the signing ceremony between Care Corporation and Rana Motors,
35:51 Head of Ownership Enhancement at Care Corporation,
35:54 Hoi Young Lee said, "This partnership symbolizes a significant step towards shared commitment
36:00 to the advancement of technical expertise in Ghana."
36:03 We deliver all our knowledge to trainers.
36:07 Then they will deliver this knowledge to not only their employees,
36:13 but also to the students, for some government institutes.
36:18 They will continue this because EV transition will take several years.
36:24 So we need some long-term strategy to support the successful launch of electric vehicles in Ghana.
36:35 Chief Operating Officer of Rana Motors, Qasem Odemat, mentioned that
36:39 several technicians and trainers stand the chance of benefiting immensely from this initiative.
36:45 We believe that training more trainers will also allow us to spread the knowledge faster,
36:51 but we cannot do that only.
36:53 Of course we train our staff, we train people from the Bosch network,
37:01 we train people from different areas, from Kumasi, from different areas and different regions from Ghana.
37:09 And of course we also train a lot of trainers from the vocational training centers across the country,
37:15 from Thema to Akrad, Kumasi, Tamale.
37:18 We are bringing instructors here, we are giving them the courses
37:21 and they go back to their vocational training centers and they give those trainings back.
37:26 Delivering a speech at the ceremony,
37:28 Chief Director of the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Patrick Nimo stated that
37:32 the MOU will cement government's effort in ensuring Ghana becomes the preferred automotive hub within the Saab region.
37:39 Strong local participation in the investment by companies such as Kia,
37:45 which also have validated our automotive policy as essential for their investment requirements and their future growth.
37:54 The dealership's arrangements, that ensures that when vehicles are assembled, it gets to market.
38:01 Lokem Industry Limited, producers of Belacqua mineral water and Bell beverage,
38:13 has launched the Belacqua's mental health campaign tab, Take a Break.
38:18 The company also used the opportunity to launch a new bottle with the mental health logo on it.
38:23 This, according to Lokem, is to create awareness of mental health related challenges.
38:29 According to its marketing manager, Magnus Day, the campaign is part of giving back to society.
38:35 This is the official launch of Belacqua's mental health campaign, which is dubbed Take a Break.
38:46 We actually saw the need for a mental health campaign because the statistics worldwide is becoming scarier.
38:56 And people are not confronting the issues as they are supposed to.
39:02 There's a lot of stigma around mental health issues.
39:07 So Belacqua thinks that this is the time to act and have a conversation.
39:12 Going for screening, going for therapy is foreign even to us as Ghanaians.
39:19 So we want to open our doors, we want to create awareness and educate us that as important as it is to take care of our bodies,
39:28 making sure that we are well clothed, we are looking good, our minds even more importantly, or most importantly, need the care.
39:41 So we need to care for our minds because the mind affects every other part of our bodies.
39:49 So that is why Belacqua is starting this mental health campaign because we contribute to the overall well-being of Ghanaians.
39:57 And we know that when people have to take a break, it usually begins with a sip of water.
40:03 And that is Belacqua mineral water.
40:06 So we decided to put this together. It's going to be a long campaign spanning many years.
40:14 That's all for business. My name is Emma Davis.

40:24 Up next, it's sports.
40:31 This is sports now on Joy News today with me, Mufti Awonogila, after Lagoon City's Ghana Premier League team.
40:37 Ace players and officials were attacked by armed robbers on their way back to Accra following their 3-0 loss against Samatex on March 8 in the Ghana Premier League.
40:48 Communications Director of the club Kwame Ndumo has been explaining what transpired on their way back to Accra.
40:54 I can confirm to you that that's what exactly happened early this morning somewhere around a town called Twaso.
41:02 We got in there and it appeared that there was a bit of a police barrier of a sort.
41:08 Because normally when you're travelling at night or at dawn, you normally come across these barriers all over some of these places.
41:14 So we thought it was a situation like that.
41:16 We realised that a number of cars had been stopped, so we assumed that it was something similar to that kind of thing.
41:23 Only to realise that these guys were bandits.
41:25 A few more guys emerged from the bushes by the roadside, got all the players to come out of the bus, got us down, pointed guns at the players and officials of the team.
41:38 They went into the bus, took what they wanted.
41:41 I've given you a list of some of the things that they have taken from the team.
41:45 Got in there, took what they wanted.
41:47 After that, they just got back to the bushes and disappeared again.
41:51 It was a horror in sight, but thank God everyone is safe.
41:55 We're back to our car now and we'll make the necessary report to the right authorities and then we'll take it from there.
42:04 That's your sports for now.
42:06 We do have more sports stories on myjoyonline.com.
42:08 The news continues with Aisha Hibai.
42:11 Time Checkout was making headlines elsewhere.
42:19 The boss and three other officials of an Indonesian firm whose cough syrup was linked to the deaths of over 200 children have been sentenced to jail.
42:27 They were handed two year prison sentences and fined 1 billion Indonesian rupiah.
42:33 The firm, Afifarma, was accused of producing cough syrups containing excess amounts of toxic substances.
42:41 The company's lawyer said they denied negligence and the firm was considering whether to appeal.
42:47 The public prosecutor said that between October 2021 and February 2022, the company received two batches of propylene glycol, which is used for making cough syrup.
42:59 These batches contain 96% to 99% ethylene glycol.
43:05 Ethylene glycol is toxic and used in paint, pens and brake fluid.
43:10 That is it for the World News.
43:11 I'm Nessa Ishobe.
43:13 World News
43:18 Well, you're welcome to it, Eshobez, and let's get talking on awards.
43:23 So at the AMA Awards, which marked the 19th edition of the African Movie Academy Awards in Nigeria, Ikeja Lagos, there was only one Gania nomination and he won.
43:34 And it was an animation.
43:35 His name is Francis Y. Brown.
43:37 And when he started his acceptance speech, he started speaking Fanti.
43:41 Well, Doreen, have you got in touch with him and had a conversation with him?
43:45 He said he only spoke Fanti because it is celebrating our culture and he didn't want to lose the entirety of the culture Ghana.
43:53 And also the fact that he won is a good representation for Ghana on the African front when it comes to films.
44:00 [Indistinct]
44:24 Yes, so it was very funny.
44:26 I intentionally did that because I needed to get that impact.
44:31 And for us to also be aware that our language is very, very important and for us to always say that we need to be authentic Africans, it means that our language shouldn't die.
44:43 A lot of local languages are dying and we are trading it off for foreign languages.
44:48 And this is a major issue because once you sell off your language, it means that you are giving up your power.
44:54 Your bargaining right is gone because you have to learn someone's language to be able to talk business or anything like that.
45:03 So I was very happy to hear them quiet in the room.
45:07 But when I started speaking English, they got it.
45:11 Did you come here with the expectation of winning this award?
45:15 No, I came here with an open mind.
45:18 I didn't come here with any type of expectations because the other nominees are very strong as well.
45:25 But for sure, I know the quality that we produce from our studio at Animax FYB Studio.
45:31 So definitely when it comes to storytelling, when it comes to production value, I know what we are capable of.
45:39 So yes, I'm happy that we won.
45:43 And that was Francis so excited about his win with Jubari title of the animation.
45:49 Well, let's still stay in Nigeria.
45:51 And Osita Hime, who is popularly known as Popo, has come out to say that before Mr. Ibu's ailment became public knowledge, he had been rendering his support.
46:01 And Mr. Ibu has undergone five or six full surgeries and his colleagues in the industry are actually calling for help for him.
46:08 Well, Osita Hime told our interview in Ikeja at the Bamoroi Convention Center where the AMAS was held that yes, he's been rendering his support and he's still giving support to Mr. Ibu.
46:20 Yeah, sickness is something that can come and before anybody.
46:25 So there is no way that is not anything that anybody can get sick at any time.
46:31 But we thank God that for life, at least keeping us alive is not where today, tomorrow will be fine.
46:40 So by God's grace, he's receiving treatment right now.
46:43 By God's grace, he'll still be fine.
46:45 Is there any way you've reached out to him or his family?
46:47 Definitely before then, I've been talking to him one on one.
46:51 You know, the sickness is not something that just started today.
46:53 It's been long.
46:55 So since then we've been talking on it.
46:57 Any projects coming up?
46:59 Yeah, sure. A lot of projects coming up.
47:01 Personal projects and also the one for the public.
47:04 And that is all the time we have here on Showbiz on Joy News today.
