Matías Rico's Fatal Crash @ Río Cuarto 2002

On the second lap of the Formula Renault final race held at the 3.310-kilometer "Autódromo Ciudad de Río Cuarto", in province of Córdoba, Argentina, Matías Rico spun in the middle of the main straight across the track, with the rest of the field in full acceleration. His car was hit broadside on the right flank by Matías Milla's vehicle at an estimated speed of 180 km/h.

In the crash, Rico lost consciousness having suffered extensive neck and internal injuries and was promptly rescued and transported to the local hospital of San Lucas, where he was admitted directly into the intensive care unit. On the way to the hospital Rico suffered two heart failures without ever regaining consciousness, and about one hour later he succumbed to his injuries.

Matías Milla was hospitalized in the same clinic with a severe trauma to the left ankle and knee and other minor injuries.

A native of Necochea, Buenos Aires, Argentina, Matías Rico was nineteen year-old. Besides being a racing driver he was an engineering student at the Universidad de La Plata, Argentina.
