01:36 Today, the Department of Chinese Studies
01:38 of the Faculty of Arts and Social Science
01:41 is celebrating its 60th anniversary.
01:45 According to my understanding,
01:47 the 60th year is a significant time marker
01:51 in the Chinese worldview.
01:53 It is referred as Yi Jia Zi in Chinese.
01:59 (audience applauding)
02:02 Representing the completion of a full cycle
02:07 and a new beginning.
02:09 To be where you are today,
02:11 I recognize that there was also unwavering support
02:15 for the department and the university
02:18 from the Chinese community.
02:20 You have sent your best youth to the university,
02:25 provided them scholarships,
02:27 accepted students as your interns,

02:45 - Some courses offered by the Department of Chinese Studies
03:07 of the University of Malaya are taught in Basel, Malaya,
03:11 opening them to students
03:14 from different ethnic backgrounds.
03:16 This initiative helps strengthening
03:20 the exchange and understanding
03:23 between different cultures in the country.
03:27 Over these decades, our department has nurtured
03:31 more than 4,000 of trilingual talents,
03:35 individuals proficient in all the three languages,
03:40 namely Basel Malayu, English language, and Chinese language,
03:45 who have actively contributed to our nation's politics,
03:50 economy, culture, and education,
03:54 becoming a key force in nation building.
03:57 At this very moment, we should reflect
04:01 and chart the course of the next 60 years.
