Lexus' full-size SUV concept is powered by next-generation BEV platform and uses prismatic batteries
That's the Lexus LF-ZL, and it's one of two major EV concepts the brand unveiled at the Japan Mobility Show. While, like the LF-ZC, it could be positioned above it as a future luxury flagship model, it could also preview an upcoming production model.
The LF-ZC is an intriguing mix of a saloon and an estate car, while the LF-ZL is a slightly more conventional SUV but has many elements that distinguish it from any existing SUV Lexus currently produces. Much like the LF-ZC, it is powered by an innovative new module structure created via gigacasting that divides the vehicle into front, middle and rear parts. It will also move autonomously on the assembly line, powered only by its battery, engine, tires and wireless controls.
The Lexus LF -ZL Concept is big. It has a length of 5,300 mm (208.6 inches), a width of 2,020 mm (75.9 inches) and a height of 1,700 mm (66.9 inches) and a massive wheelbase of 3,350 mm (131.8 inches). It was designed with a completely flat floor and has a technology-laden interior to entertain passengers. The driver's side of the cabin features a bifurcated steering wheel with a small vertical display on the left for operating the shifter and various human-driven and autonomous driving modes. A similar screen is then positioned to the right of the steering wheel and houses the media controls. There is a digital instrument panel right under the windshield.
It's a similar story on the back end. Lexus designed the LF-ZL Concept to seat four, and the rear occupants have reclining lounge-style chairs with leg rests and a small bamboo partition between them. Like the LF-ZC, the LF-ZL uses a new operating system called Arene, which learns and anticipates the driver's needs and personalizes the mobility experience for them.
Powering the LF-ZL concept are advanced high-performance batteries with a prismatic structure. Lexus says these batteries achieve superior energy density by simplifying and compressing the battery structure. These batteries will also have much better range than a traditional EV.
Unlike the LF-ZC, which Lexus said would produce a production model in 2026, the automaker has not confirmed whether the LF-ZL will go into production, describing it as "a look at a future where mobility, people and society are seamlessly interconnected." .”
