00:00 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:01 Our guest is very important to a lot of very dangerous people.
00:07 Shh.
00:08 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:09 Ah, I see what this is about.
00:13 "The Continental" explores the birth of the John Wick universe.
00:17 It takes place in the '70s.
00:18 It really follows young Winston, who is played
00:20 by Ian McShane in the film, and how
00:22 he became the head of the Continental
00:24 that we've all seen and loved in the films.
00:26 Looking for the man in a mask.
00:29 It's a cravat.
00:30 Much like the John Wick films, kind of a parallel world.
00:33 The high table, the violence, the fun.
00:37 Oh, oh, oh.
00:38 Is this how you get to the gift shop?
00:41 We're showing the early versions of the kitchen, the speakeasy,
00:46 the hotel lobby bar.
00:49 In the lobby spaces, we have a very interesting location,
00:51 which is the former embassy for the UK here in Budapest.
00:55 We've just kind of rewound the clock a little bit.
00:58 The Continental that we meet is decrepit.
01:01 It's corrupt.
01:02 Cormac, who's running it, is amoral and vindictive.
01:06 Shoot Mr. Avery for me.
01:08 Sir, the rules.
01:09 Oh, yeah, the rules, yeah.
01:10 [SCREAMING]
01:13 Gentlemen.
01:15 There's Cormac's office, which is not seen in the Wick films.
01:18 No one knows it existed.
01:20 Cormac's penthouse suite is actually
01:22 this beautiful old building called
01:24 Museum 17, which features a very dramatic staircase.
01:28 And beautiful, ornate carving and details.
01:31 I don't think you're hearing me.
01:32 Are we done here?
01:34 Sure, I guess the--
01:35 show them the elevator.
01:38 The DNA of the hotel is analog in a digital world.
01:42 It's like a magic building with interesting secret passages
01:46 and pneumatic tube systems.
01:50 We are constantly looking for new areas and rooms to explore.
01:56 Hi.
01:57 Hi.
01:58 [THUD]
02:01 Scale-wise, there's this whole other side of the hotel
02:03 that you've never seen.
02:05 We've built a large exterior back lot set here at Origo.
02:09 Really quite an enormous set build.
02:11 The crew stopped that day.
02:12 It was just mind-blowing seeing that in real life.
02:16 That's your holy grail.
02:17 Holy grail for who?
02:19 Whoever gets to it first.
02:20 [MUSIC PLAYING]
02:25 [EXPLOSION]
02:28 As most fans will know, that hotel is a building
02:34 that exists in Manhattan.
02:35 The owners of the building actually
02:37 refused us permission to copy the building exactly.
02:40 We leaned into it.
02:41 And so that's when we added the sculptures
02:43 of the eagles and decorative columns and things like that.
02:47 We have no authority here.
02:48 Whatever goes on there goes on.
02:50 We see sets that we showed in the movies,
02:52 like on "John Wick 3" where Keanu was shot off the rooftop.
02:56 We were able to take the existing design
02:58 and utilize that.
03:00 And we added a little bit here and there to it
03:02 so that the stunt department could have a really
03:04 good fight in the pool.
03:05 [MUSIC PLAYING]
03:10 New York back then was mayhem.
03:12 There was crime, gangsters, the mob.
03:14 It was the Wild West.
03:15 [MUSIC PLAYING]
03:18 We built the Chinatown as a freestanding set
03:21 that was only possible by flying people in from different parts
03:24 of the world.
03:25 My father built that dojo.
03:27 Dojo is Japanese.
03:28 This is Chinatown.
03:30 The dojo is an interesting place because you
03:32 see what looks to be a kung fu or karate studio.
03:35 And then it has all these kind of secrets in it.
03:38 This trap door that opens up, it looks
03:39 to be like it's a bowling alley.
03:41 But no, it's converted into a gun range.
03:44 You read a scene description that says "bowling alley,"
03:46 and they're running a gun operation.
03:48 As soon as you have a sentence like that,
03:50 you have an idea for a wonderful set.
03:54 Strike.
03:55 We want to know more about the inner workings of this hotel.
03:58 We get to know more about these rules, more about this world.
04:03 There's Easter eggs all over the place.
04:05 Fans will recognize the adjudicator coin, the gold
04:07 coins.
04:08 There are rules at play here, silly boy.
04:11 Excommunicado.
04:12 That's Latin for you.
04:15 You play it safe on any John Wick stuff, you fall flat.
04:18 It has to be nuts.
04:21 It is an amazing kind of place, just
04:24 in the weight and the texture of everything that's happening.
04:27 I felt like every day I was getting a gift on Christmas.
04:30 Oh my god, look at that crowd.
04:31 Look at that wardrobe.
04:32 Look at that performance.
04:33 And then Christmas came.
04:35 And I was like, this doesn't feel anything
04:36 like what I was getting on the set.
04:37 [LAUGHS]
04:39 Can I get a room, please?
04:41 I'm sorry, we're fully booked.
04:44 And away we go.
04:46 See you all at the grand reopening.
