00:09 Amanda Owen has shared how she and husband Clive managed to buy their dream home to use as a holiday let.

00:18 The 46-year-old star said that they had wanted to buy the 17th-century cottage
00:23 as part of a plan to secure an income away from farming.

00:29 When the accommodation, called The Furs, came on the market,
00:33 the couple didn't believe that they would be able to afford it
00:36 and keep their dream alive of owning holiday homes.
00:38 [Music]
00:42 She said that at the time, her and Clive, 66,
00:46 still owned a small flat in Kirby Stephen, Cumbria, from when they first got together.
00:51 [Music]
00:55 It was an asset that they were struggling to sell,
00:58 but Amanda found out that the owners of The Furs were also having problems finding a buyer.
01:02 [Music]
01:06 Clive then hatched a plan which would see the flat being used in part exchange
01:10 for the countryside residents as they were gutted about the asking price.

01:17 In her book, Adventures of the Yorkshire Shepherdess,
01:20 Amanda revealed how the proposed a deal to the owners and her surprise
01:24 as it then worked out perfectly.
01:26 [Music]
01:29 Amanda wrote, "I told Clive that they too were having difficulty finding a buyer,
01:35 although for different reasons than ourselves."
01:37 [Music]
01:41 "I don't think Susan likes what the potential buyers what to do with the house,
01:45 and she's trying to put them off," I said.
01:47 [Music]
01:51 "I think Graham is humoring her, he knows how much the place means to her."
01:55 Clive jokingly said they should try part exchanging their flat in Kirby Stephen,
02:00 but didn't really believe it would happen.
02:02 [Music]
02:06 Amanda initially didn't buy into this plan and she wrote, "I doubt it," I said.
02:11 [Music]
02:14 "They're already bought a house there and what would they want with a pokey little flat anyway?
02:19 I thought that it was a ridiculously stupid idea.
02:22 There was no way that I was going to put that suggestion to Susan, ever."
02:26 [Music]
02:29 Clive then said, "It's no good Susan putting folks off thinking
02:33 that if she waits long enough we're going to buy it."
02:35 [Music]
02:39 Amanda continued, "He was right, it needed sorting out once and for.
02:44 We arranged to go over at the weekend when Raven was at home
02:48 to keep an eye on the littler ones."
02:49 [Music]
02:54 "Susan and Graham welcomed us with tea and biscuits and I couldn't help but wonder
02:58 whether they thought that we had good news for them."
03:00 [Music]
03:03 "I decided that Clive should do the talking but just to make sure there were no crossed wires,
03:08 I thought I'd be clear from the outset."
03:10 [Music]
03:14 To Amanda's surprise, she said the owners proposed the same plan,
03:18 that they make the flat part of the deal,
03:21 meaning that Clive didn't even have to suggest it at all.
03:23 [Music]
03:27 The Yorkshire Shepherdess admitted, "I nearly choked on my tea,
03:31 I could not believe my ears, my despondency evaporated."
03:34 [Music]
03:38 "I had a complete turnaround from despair to elation.
03:42 They were all on the same page with the holiday home idea with Graham saying that they had plans
03:47 to turn Amanda and Clive's flat into a holiday home, like the Owens were going to do with the Furs."
