00:00 A US-based security company has sued Air Canada over gold bars and cash worth millions that
00:06 were stolen from Toronto's airport in April.
00:09 Brinks International alleges the airline was reckless and had failed to prevent the theft.
00:14 The goods, worth more than $C$20m ($15m, £8.12m), had recently arrived on an Air Canada
00:23 flight from Zurich to Toronto before they were stolen.
00:27 The heist is one of the largest in Canada's history.
00:30 Among the items stolen were gold bars that weighed 400.19kg and $2m in cash.
00:38 The 14th of April theft garnered international headlines at the time, and it remains unsolved
00:45 by the police.
00:46 In the lawsuit, filed in the Federal Court of Canada on 6 October, Brinks said it was
00:52 hired by a bank and a precious metal company to coordinate the shipment of the goods.
00:57 The goods were stolen 42 minutes after they were unloaded from a plane that had just arrived
01:02 in Toronto Pearson International Airport from Switzerland, the company said.
01:08 After they were unloaded, the lawsuit alleged that an unidentified person gained access
01:13 to the warehouse where the valuables were kept at around 18.30 local time.
01:18 No security protocols or features were in place to monitor, restrict or otherwise regulate
01:24 the unidentified individual's access to the facilities, Brinks said.
01:29 The person was allegedly able to enter by showing an airway bill for an unrelated shipment
01:34 to an Air Canada employee.
01:36 The airline then released the shipment to the individual, who absconded with a cargo,
01:41 the lawsuit stated.
01:42 Brinks alleged that Air Canada staff made no attempt to verify the waybill's authenticity
01:47 in any way, and that the theft could have been prevented if Air Canada properly followed
01:53 its security guidelines.
01:55 The company argued that Air Canada is liable for the damages.
01:59 Brinks has asked that the price of the goods stolen be paid back by the airline in full.
02:04 Air Canada has not released a public statement on the allegations.
02:09 The BBC has reached out to the airline for comment.
02:12 The theft is one of the biggest heists in Canadian history.
02:16 Other heists include the 2011 and 2012 Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist when 3,000 tonnes
02:23 of syrup valued at $18.7 million were stolen from a storage facility in Quebec.
