Hamed Buhaleeba, one of the United Arab Emirates most successful sportsmen, died when his offshore catamaran somersaulted and landed upside down during the Cowes-Torquay race. The accident happened off Ryde, Tin the Solent, the strait between the Isle of Wight and Great Britain.

Hamed Buhaleeba was the throttleman alongside his brother Rashid Buhaleeba who drove the Victory M-1, leading the Class 2 race. The 32 feet catamaran hit a wave, went airborne and landed upside down, while traveling at more than 100 mi/h (160 km/h). Rashid escaped serious injuri, Hamed Buhaleeba was found still trapped in the cockpit by the rescuers. He was taken to a hospital in Gosport, Hampshire, England, where he was declared dead an hour after admission.

As a boat driver Hamed Buhaleeba won 25 powerboating titles in his career, racing with Dubai's Victory team, mostly in the famed Victory 7.
