Eric Braeden on real-life cancer and Y&R triumph in latest Interview
Transcript
00:00 We have all seen Victor taking his throne back and reminding everyone who the boss is around town.
00:05 And recently, Eric Braden just opened up in an interview about what's going on for his character
00:10 in The Young and the Restless amidst his own health battles. So, without any further ado,
00:15 let's jump right in. In an exclusive interview with Soap Opera Digest,
00:24 iconic soap opera actor Eric Braden, known for his portrayal of Victor Newman on The Young and
00:29 the Restless, gave us a little insight on Victor's recent power moves as well as his journey in
00:34 winning his battle against bladder cancer. The interview started off with how it felt for him
00:39 to see Victor getting back to his rightful place, and it's heartwarming. Eric Braden couldn't be
00:44 happier about Victor Newman's latest progress in The Young and the Restless. He's thrilled to see
00:48 Victor back at the throne of Newman Enterprises, showing Adam the Door, giving Victoria a reality
00:54 check, and placing Nikki in the CEO chair at Newman Media. According to Braden, it was high
00:59 time for Victor to reclaim his rightful position after wishy-washy phase. He said, "I hate that
01:05 in-between bullshit where he's neither retired nor in charge. It was high time and I loved it."
01:10 In the interview, Braden also gave a glimpse into Victor's complex parental struggles.
01:15 He's a father who yearns for family unity but struggles to accept that his kids have their
01:20 own minds. Braden highlights how Victor's challenging upbringing in an orphanage has
01:25 deeply influenced his desire for a tight-knit clan. He wants to be the one calling the shots,
01:30 but his kids aren't always on board with that plan. He also got into the whole whether Victor
01:35 treats Adam poorly or not, and he believes it's simply not true. He believes Victor has been fair
01:40 to Adam and pointed out that he has consistently expressed loyalty and support for his son,
01:45 despite Adam's feelings of abandonment. He highlighted the history that shaped their
01:49 relationship, specifically mentioning that Victor had wanted Adam to be raised in Genoa City,
01:54 but it was Hope's decision to move to a farm in Kansas against Victor's wishes. He noted that,
02:00 "Regardless of legal arrangements, in divorces, the children are the victims of it, period. This
02:05 is a perfect example of it and that victimhood carries on and on and on."
02:09 While Victor might be a bit controlling with his other children, Abby seems to be the exception.
02:14 Brayden doesn't quite have the answer to this question yet, saying it's all in the hands of
02:19 the writers. But on to the main part, we finally get to hear the exact reason for Victoria's demotion.
02:25 Brayden said that it all boils down to Victor's innate suspicion of outsiders infiltrating his
02:30 business empire. He believes Victoria may have been up to some behind-the-scenes maneuvering
02:34 with Nate, and trust issues are never far from the surface. He said, "He's very suspicious of
02:40 anyone using love or marriage to his offspring as a means to get into the family business.
02:44 He doesn't like that." Just like he said, Victor always watches not just the people of Genoa City,
02:50 but also the fans. Brayden is looming around social media too, looking at what the fans are
02:55 talking about. He said, "I read the fans' remarks almost every day, so I know what's going on in
03:01 the discourse of viewers, and I share their feelings. It's interesting, my feelings and
03:05 theirs are almost in synchronicity." Brayden has gone through quite a lot in the recent past,
03:10 including battling bladder cancer. However, he's faced it head-on, with a no-nonsense attitude.
03:16 He opens up about why he decided to share his diagnosis, emphasizing the importance of
03:21 preventive exams. "If I had not had a cystoscopy at a certain time, which really came about sort
03:26 of accidentally, I would not have known that I had cancer, and it would have, by now, reached
03:30 who knows what stage. My eldest brother, who is eight years older than I am, had his bladder
03:35 removed ten years ago because he did not have the luxury of finding out that he had cancer before,"
03:40 Eric told Digest. He went on to note that, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."
03:46 He is thankful for the outpouring of love and support from fans, which has been a massive
03:50 source of strength throughout his health journey, and said that he reads every single one of them.
03:55 No matter what is going on in Brayden's life, one thing is for sure, that he absolutely loves his
04:00 job, especially because he gets to work with fantastic people like Melody Thomas-Scott,
04:05 Amelia Hindley, Joshua Morrow, Mark Grossman, and Sean Dominic. They have a blast together on set,
04:11 sharing lots of laughs, and that is what really gets him feeling better during the stressful
04:16 times. This is the exact reason why we all love Eric. His positive attitude towards life and his
04:22 fighting spirit is what inspires others. What is your favorite thing about Eric Brayden?
