02:53 The roads narrowing and there was a big crash.

02:59 Arnaud Deleu caught out,

03:01 and after multiple issues during the race,

03:03 the Belgian abandoned, one of 15 who did not finish.

03:09 and around two-minute gaps formed across the board.

03:12 That's when Louis Askey elected to test the waters,

03:16 the young Briton out on his own.

03:18 As the pace intensified, so the peloton fractured,

03:21 and two former Paris Tour winners in the ranks of a chasing seven,

03:25 John Degenkolb in 2013,

03:27 and former European champion Mathieu Trentin,

03:30 twice this race winner.

03:32 Askey still out on his own.

03:33 His previous best finish was second on the classic Loire-Atlantique.

03:37 Could he go one better here?

03:40 An average speed of 46 kilometres an hour maintained.

03:43 That saw the peloton hunt down and swallow up the group of Trentin and Degenkolb.

03:48 Plenty called for an animated race.

03:50 It duly arrived as they rode past the Noisy Vineyard,

03:54 the penultimate section of the dusty vineyard track,

03:57 and two big favourites made a move.

04:02 and newly crowned European champion Christophe Laporte,

04:05 a good position chasing the race leader.

04:08 Potential for a reduced sprint in Tours,

04:10 even if four riders once again broke.

04:19 And they successfully bridged the gap to join the head of the race,

04:22 Groupama FDJ, with a potential advantage,

04:25 Legac joining Askey with 10K to go.

04:28 The final five kilometres and entering the city of Tours,

04:32 and the peloton had missed their chance to set up their sprinters,

04:35 still 30 seconds from the escapades.

04:38 A real battle.

04:39 It looked like a new winner would be crowned as we sped past La Flamme Rouge.

04:48 He's still thinking about winning after all day in the breakaway.

06:47 What was the plan for you specifically today?

06:50 Yeah, for the race, we just had to stay up front.

06:52 We knew there was no crazy crosswinds or anything,

06:55 so just staying as calm as possible into the dirt sections and the hills

06:59 and then there stay in the front

07:02 and make sure our sprinters were in good position.

07:05 And for me, it was to follow the moves on the hills.

07:07 And, yeah, it came out good for me up there at the end.

07:11 Sheehan on top of the world,

07:14 finishing ahead of long-time leader Askey,

07:17 who spent 172 kilometres at the front,

07:20 completing the podium, Tobias Haaland-Jørgensen,

07:24 who held off Delbov and Legac.

07:27 Laporte the strongest in the peloton sprint to the line,

07:29 but nine seconds after the winner.

07:32 No treble celebrations for Arnaud Daumere,

07:34 eighth overall when the dust settled.

07:36 Sprint success in the last two editions,

07:38 but never likely with the way the race unfolded.

07:41 Congratulations to Riley Sheehan for his stunning victory,
