The most iconic ladder in gaming history... you can now skip. #metalgearsolid #gaming #gamingsecrets
Transcript
00:00 So speedrunning a game is one thing, but maybe you sometimes just want to skip one particularly
00:04 troublesome or boring section of a game that you've played numerous times before.
00:09 Now, while the average player likely isn't aware of the various tricky things that they
00:13 can employ to circumvent levels or even entire chunks of a game, just about any modern video
00:18 game will have a ton of YouTube videos demonstrating how it's possible to cut a sequence down
00:22 to a mere triviality.
00:24 So let's take a look at them today, as I'm Jules, this is WhatCulture.com, and these
00:27 are 10 Video Game Sections You Didn't Know You Could Skip.
00:31 10.
00:32 Liberty Island - Deus Ex
00:34 Deus Ex opens with a memorable mission set on Liberty Island, and while you probably
00:38 shouldn't skip it on your first playthrough, you definitely can employ a sneaky trick to
00:43 breeze through the vast majority of the hour-long mission on subsequent runs.
00:47 The skip is achieved by retrieving a gas grenade near the pier's exit, and then heading over
00:52 to the Yenakdo HQ.
00:54 Throw a grenade at the HQ's front door, and doing so should cause some of the gas to leak
00:58 inside the building, in turn alerting the AI inside and causing the guard to open the
01:03 door in a panic.
01:04 You're then able to run inside past the guard, triggering the end of the Liberty Island level
01:08 without really doing much of anything.
01:10 Hilariously, Eidos clearly realised the potential for players to do this, and so the guard inside
01:14 will say "I heard you just slipped by a lot of terrorists.
01:17 Pretty smart."
01:18 9.
01:19 The Lighthouse Battle - Half-Life 2
01:21 In Half-Life 2's mid-game chapter, Sand Traps, you'll get to the end of Highway 17 and reach
01:26 Lighthouse Point, a coastal resistance base which ends up being attacked by the Combine
01:30 forces.
01:31 Gordon must then help protect the base during a lengthy, protracted shootout, but creative
01:36 players found that there was a way to skip right past this.
01:39 The siege sequence is triggered by parking your vehicle in the area and approaching a
01:43 resistance officer who calls you over, but if you do neither, you're able to sneakily
01:48 circumvent it - by either piling items up into a platform-like formation, or grenade
01:53 jumping, you can propel yourself onto a grass verge in the area, which you can then follow
01:57 around to reach a cave-like entrance nearby.
02:00 This entrance leads directly into the next section of the game, the famous Antlion Beach,
02:04 while saving at least 5 minutes of your time in the process.
02:08 8.
02:09 Up to Vault 112 - Fallout 3
02:12 As expansive as Fallout games might be, the game's critical path is relatively short,
02:16 with the early game setting the player on the path to meet up with your father.
02:20 On an initial playthrough, you'll need to complete a number of quests which will eventually
02:23 lead you to your dad's location at Vault 112.
02:26 But once this location is known, there's absolutely nothing stopping you from just
02:30 making a beeline for it on a future run, and so upon exiting Vault 101 at the end of the
02:35 game's prologue, you can skip a few hours worth of missions by just heading straight
02:38 to Daddy at Vault 112.
02:41 Getting there isn't a simple amble by any means, but the game makes no concerted efforts
02:45 at all to prevent you from booking it to Dad once his location has been ascertained.
02:50 Hilariously, some players have even reported legitimately stumbling upon Vault 12 by total
02:54 accident while exploring the wasteland, in turn accidentally skipping other massive parts
02:58 of the story, much to their chagrin.
03:01 7.
03:02 Most of Rat Race - Battletoads
03:04 The original Battletoads' 10th level, Rat Race, gives the player the opportunity to
03:08 skip right through the bulk of it.
03:10 When you reach any of the bombs in the race, kick the bomb and the pursuing rat will begin
03:13 falling upside down.
03:15 Charge or kick the rat twice before he lands on the ground, and the level will come to
03:19 an abrupt end, due to the rat being the game's end-stage boss, General Slaughter, in disguise.
03:25 KOing the rat will trick the game into thinking that you've also beaten General Slaughter,
03:29 sending you straight to the 11th level without needing to formally battle him at the end.
03:33 It's a tricky sequence to pull off, but each of the three bombs on the stage gives you
03:37 an opportunity to do so, saving yourself the legwork of getting through the rest of it
03:41 as God - and the developers - intended.
03:43 6.
03:44 The First Half of Outskirts - Halo 2
03:47 Halo 2's Outskirts is, to be blunt, quite the pain in the arse.
03:52 You have to contend with a host of jackal snipers who can make short work of all but
03:55 the most diligent of players, though mercifully, there is a secret workaround which allows
03:59 you to skip basically the entire first half of the mission.
04:02 Referred to by fans as the "Rooftop's Vacation", this exploit lets you leap from a piece of
04:06 rubble onto a ledge in an early alcove part of the level, letting you reach the otherwise
04:11 inaccessible rooftops and speedily make your way to the Hotel Zanzibar.
04:15 This lets you skip over a sniper-filled alley and a series of courtyard battles that are
04:19 filled with tough enemies, and basically saves you about 10 minutes of hard graft.
04:24 This is, of course, especially useful for players attempting to complete a legendary
04:27 run who, frankly, need all the help they can possibly get.
04:31 5.
04:32 Basically the Whole Game - Nier Automata - Potato Patata
04:36 In early 2021, almost four years after Nier Automata - Potato Patata's release, reputed
04:41 modder Lance MacDonald discovered the game's final secret - a secret code which allowed
04:46 you to bypass pretty much the entire game.
04:49 After defeating the prologue boss, Marx, you have to place yourself between a series of
04:52 barrels in the now-empty boss arena, and then, on the PS4 version of the game, hold R2 and
04:58 press up, down, up, right, left, square, circle, triangle, and cross.
05:02 This code will cause the game to skip immediately to the last of its many endings, as well as
05:07 unlocking a chapter select menu, in-game trophy store, and even a debug menu.
05:12 MacDonald emphasized that this wasn't a glitch or an exploit, but a cheat code hard-coded
05:16 into the game's engine, and the game's director subsequently took to Twitter to confirm that
05:20 this was indeed the game's final secret he'd encouraged players to seek out.
05:24 While there's certainly a lot of pleasure in beating Automata - Potato Patata - and experiencing
05:28 its endings the hard way, it's an intriguing find all the same.
05:32 Number 4 - Test Chamber 14 - Portal
05:35 With the Portal games being focused around the player's manipulation of physics, it's
05:39 perhaps not terribly surprising that creative players are able to circumvent much of the
05:43 intended gameplay, even skipping entire test chambers in the process.
05:47 Take Test Chamber 14, which will take more regularly skilled players a couple of minutes
05:51 to get through, or you can just bypass it completely.
05:55 This is done by placing a portal by raising the platform at the exit, and then heading
05:59 to the left to trigger a raising staircase.
06:02 From there, get to the top of the staircase, and drop a second portal on the floor behind
06:05 you where the steps have receded, and then just jump down into this portal.
06:09 This will slingshot you out of the first portal you dropped by the raised platform, giving
06:13 you enough momentum to reach the top of the platform, and then strut away to the exit
06:17 that is mere feet away.
06:19 This can easily be achieved in 30 seconds, and save you all the faff of having to spend
06:23 several minutes actually lowering the elevator as Valve originally intended.
06:27 Number 3 - The Boat - Mirror's Edge
06:29 Mirror's Edge's parkour traversal mechanics may be ludicrously entertaining, but they're
06:34 also heavily exploitable, in large part because the original game was rushed to market without
06:38 extensive QA testing.
06:40 EA's loss, though, is the player's gain, as it gave speedrunners ample opportunity
06:44 to skip sections of the title, perhaps most impressively, a large chunk of the game's
06:49 seventh chapter.
06:50 The boat sequence in this chapter can be skipped by making use of an infamous kick glitch,
06:54 where if you kick in the middle of a wall run, you'll briefly land on an invisible
06:57 platform from which you're able to fleetingly jump, in turn allowing you to reach areas
07:01 that you definitely shouldn't be able to.
07:03 By using the kick glitch just ahead of the boat, you're able to reach and trigger the
07:07 post-boat checkpoint, shaving around 5 minutes off your playtime, or for speedrunners, about
07:11 3.
07:12 Number 2 - The Ladder - Metal Gear Solid 3 - Snake Eater
07:16 Nobody who's played Metal Gear Solid 3 will ever forget the infamous scene where, after
07:20 defeating the tricky boss, The End, players will have to climb an extremely long ladder
07:25 that feels like it's never going to end.
07:27 The two-minute ladder climb set to the game's iconic theme song is as hilariously bizarre
07:32 as it is strangely serene, even if it's also the bane of anyone trying to speedrun
07:36 this game, because it's an unavoidable brick wall that slows progress.
07:40 Well, that was until just recently, when speedrunner Aple discovered a glitch to skip the ladder
07:45 entirely.
07:46 The glitch is achieved by standing next to the ladder, and then equipping a specific
07:49 series of items that will force Naked Snake into a T-pose.
07:53 Then, attempting to climb the ladder will send him flying to the top of the shaft.
07:57 And like that, speedrunners found a foolproof way to shave two minutes off of their runs,
08:01 even if for regular folk, the ladder climb is admittedly a much-needed moment of tranquility
08:05 following the absolutely exhausting fight against The End.
08:09 At number 1, everything up to the last boss, Spyro Enter the Dragonfly
08:13 So when it was released back in 2002, Spyro Enter the Dragonfly received wildly mixed
08:18 reviews, with many critics pointing to the game's overabundance of bugs, indicating an
08:22 obviously rushed cycle of development.
08:24 Many also complained about Enter the Dragonfly's short length, though per those aforementioned
08:29 glitches, you can actually boil the game down from a few hours, to mere minutes.
08:33 But you see, the game shipped with a glitch where if players performed a ground pound
08:37 on a locked portal cover, they'd clip through it and be able to access the level inside.
08:41 This even applies to the portal that leads to the game's final boss, Ripto.
08:45 Within seconds of starting the game, you're able to approach the Ripto portal, ground
08:49 pound it, and end up right at Ripto's feet, ready to take him on.
08:53 This has naturally allowed speedrunners to beat Enter the Dragonfly in the time it takes
08:56 to brew a cup of coffee, or even less in fact, as the current world record sits at a mere
09:01 one minute and seven seconds.
09:03 Incredible right?
09:04 And there we go my friends, those were 10 video game sections you didn't know you could
