00:06 We are here with the latest updates and information regarding Len Arkin who has passed away at
00:12 the age of 89.
00:14 He was a popular character actor throughout his whole career.
00:17 Even though he started off as a famous actor, despite the fact that he is best known for
00:21 comedies, the most notable of which being Catch-22 in 1970 and The Little Miss Sunshine
00:28 in 2006.
00:30 He was not necessarily best at light-heartedness, even at his funniest, he emanated seriousness.
00:35 "I studied acting seriously," he declared back in 1982.
00:39 "I'm not a clown who aspires to be Hamlet or anything like that," the man said.
00:44 "Simply put, I believe that if one sees themselves as a comic, then their primary responsibility
00:49 is to make other people laugh.
00:51 He had the potential to be a phony character."
00:53 "Alan does not make you halfway as an actor," remarked the director-writer Marshall Brickman
00:59 who cast him as a deluded scientist in the 1980s science-comedy fiction.
01:04 "Simon, the film was written and directed by Marshall Brickman.
01:08 He has a really solemn acting style.
01:10 I have the highest regard for him.
01:12 However, he's not interested in swaying your opinion with his charming attitude.
01:16 The rigor that he brings to his photography is of the sort that can be a little challenging
01:21 for an audience to take it in.
01:23 You either have a positive opinion about him, about Alan, or you don't have his role as
01:28 a hero."
01:29 Snorting grandfathered in the film, Little Miss Sunshine earned him an Academy Award,
01:34 solidifying his position as a national legend in the United States.
01:38 Arkin was born and raised in the borough of Brooklyn in the state of New York.
01:42 His mother, Patrice Nuartes, and father David Arkin were both educators.
01:46 When he was younger, he participated in acting classes.
01:50 When Alan was 11 years old, his family made the move from Chicago to Los Angeles.
01:54 However, during the McCarthy era, the family ran into difficulties when David was accused
01:59 of having communist affiliations, which were later proven to be false soon after Arkin
02:04 graduated from college.
02:06 He joined a folk band, the Terrys, in which he sang and played the guitar.
02:11 This was the beginning of his brief career in music in 1957.
02:15 The band had just one hit record, the "Banana Boat Song," which peaked in the top five of
02:19 the Billboard charts.
02:20 However, Arkin, who had started taking acting classes when he was a child, decided to leave
02:25 the band and focus his efforts on establishing himself as an actor.
02:30 According to a history that can be found on the website for the organization, Arkin had
02:34 moved to Chicago by the year 1960 and was one of the early members of the improvisational
02:41 comedy ensemble known as Second City.
02:43 "Second City is the reason I'm alive today," Arkin stated, "that I had a direct impact
02:48 on his survival.
02:49 I have a gut feeling that it's true for a lot of other people too."
02:53 After gaining some experience performing on the Second City stage in Chicago, Alan Arkin
02:57 made his debut on Broadway in 1961.
03:00 In the play From the Second City, he then went on to win a Tony Award for his performance
03:05 in the play Enter Laughing in 1963.
03:09 Arkin has been nominated for six Emmy Awards, the most recent of which was for the Kaminsky
03:14 method in addition to his work in film, and on stage, Arkin has also been nominated for
03:18 these awards.
03:19 After the second season, which aired in 2021, he did not return for the third in the year
03:24 2020.
03:26 He gave an interview to The Guardian in which he said that, "I am like a horse going down
03:30 the trail because acting is so embedded in my physiognomy and the conduits of my brain.
03:36 I often find that I am oblivious to certain aspects of the business.
03:39 However, I do not require it at this time.
03:42 It's probably time for me to get over it."
03:44 Arkin is survived by his wife, Suzanne Newlander, whom he wed in 1996, as well as three of their
03:50 children, boys Adam Arkin and Matthew Arkin, whom he shares with his second wife, Donna.
