00:00 Is my love for Kevin Costner's The Postman my worst opinion?
00:03 The actor and Reddit would seemingly agree with me.
00:06 My mother is the type of woman who has the TV on 24/7 and the TV is usually playing crowd-pleasing
00:11 favorites on cable or subscription networks like HBO.
00:14 For a time in the early to mid-90s, the TV frequently favored Kevin Costner movies, some
00:19 of which were critically acclaimed and some of which were flops like Waterworld and The
00:23 Postman.
00:24 For me, The Postman became a pretty standard favorite over the years.
00:27 But is it my worst opinion or does this movie not suck as much as people like to make out?
00:32 Why people seem to hate The Postman
00:33 First of all, while dystopian movies had a run for a while between The Hunger Games,
00:38 The Walking Dead and projects like Divergent, that wasn't really a thing in 1997 when
00:43 The Postman came out.
00:44 The Kevin Costner flick struggled further because it was based on a book by David Brin
00:48 and a lot of the elements in the book did not make the movie, which fans of the novel
00:52 seemingly didn't like.
00:54 The movie also came out shortly after Waterworld and feels eerily similar in some ways, given
00:58 Waterworld occasionally pushes the boundaries of crowd-pleasing sci-fi.
01:02 Remember the explanation for how to drink your own pee?
01:05 I do think there's a faction of people who tied these two movies together, even though
01:09 one is tonally more grounded than the other.
01:11 But probably the biggest hurdle for The Postman was its runtime.
01:15 Directed by Kevin Costner himself, The Postman clocks in at just under 3 hours and it's
01:19 3 hours you really feel.
01:21 Today audiences are a little more used to long runtimes thanks to blockbusters from
01:25 DC and Marvel, not to mention flicks like Avatar, The Way of Water, 3 hours, 12 minutes.
01:30 They are also willing to sit through extra scenes in projects like Oppenheimer, 3 hours,
01:35 at least when it comes to directors they trust.
01:37 Movies were often a lot shorter in this period, so this is a really notable runtime, particularly
01:41 for a movie that is serious and leans heavily into dystopian theming.
01:45 Upon rewatch, you certainly feel all 3 hours.
01:48 Whether that's a good or bad thing is largely up to taste.
01:51 Why The Postman doesn't suck, according to me and Reddit.
01:54 That's right, I'll state it.
01:55 I love The Postman.
01:57 I love Will Patton's performance in the movie.
01:59 To me, he's having way more fun even than Kevin Costner, who has the meteor role.
02:03 Costner's playing a dude who is basically a liar but who scrapes by things to quick
02:07 thinking and becomes the deposter child for a whole movement.
02:10 So he's not a typical hero either.
02:12 Tom Petty cameos and it's a pretty good performance.
02:14 There are a lot of fun cultural tough stones.
02:17 Or Lincoln Mercury, that make the viewer think about how life would change if governance
02:21 and control fell apart.
02:22 It's got a western vibe.
02:23 I mean what is not to like here people.
02:26 Turns out, I'm not the only person who feels this way.
02:28 I actually found this shocking when I did research for this piece.
02:31 The Postman isn't exactly a movie I'd love to champion Givena.
02:35 Most people have never seen it but b) most people still manage to have negative opinions
02:39 about it.
02:40 Thankfully, the internet has many niches and fandom for the 1997 Kevin Costner film is
02:45 definitely one of them.
02:46 For example, a quick perusal of forum on reddit has some people, yes, complaining about
02:51 the runtime and many others defending the infamous Kevin Costner film.
02:55 It has a unique story with reasonable production value for a 90's movie.
02:59 Parts of it could be better.
03:00 But the acting was good.
03:01 It tells a story of hope coming from places you would least expect and superior ideas
03:05 ultimately triumphing over bad ones even when they are at disadvantage.
03:09 I love this movie for many reasons.
03:11 I till love till this movie.
03:14 Also 2M freaking PTTI.
03:16 I just want to say I agree with you and offer my support lol.
03:19 I've actually watched it a few times and I quite enjoy it.
03:22 You do have to have like 6 hours to kill though.
03:24 This is one of the best underrated post-apop movies of its time.
03:27 I absolutely love this movie.
03:29 If you haven't seen it, you should look it up.
03:31 If you're a fan of the dystopian/survival genre or of Costner, you should at least see
03:36 it.
03:37 It's a long movie, almost 3 hours, but it's an iconic movie.
03:40 Check it out.
03:41 Thanks OP.
03:42 Glad to know I'm not the only one.
03:43 To me, The Postman is a classic.
03:45 I loved it way back then and I still love it today.
03:48 Still have no idea why it got shat on so heavily.
03:51 Perhaps loving this movie isn't the worst opinion in the world.
03:54 What Kevin Costner says about The Postman.
03:56 While doing press for Man of Steel, Kevin Costner spoke about his two infamous flops,
04:00 The Postman and Waterworld.
04:02 While he said he enjoyed making both movies very much, he legitimately feels the former
04:06 is a good movie.
04:08 Speaking to the Huffington Post, Costner himself joked about his complicated lead character,
04:12 also noting he felt like the movie came out well.
04:14 "Ugh, maybe not 'Dances with Wolves' well, but well."
04:17 So it seems he's on the same page with certain factions of the internet when it comes to
04:20 the flick.
04:21 He commented on this again just a short time ago when he noted, "I was always kind of
04:25 proud of it," again defending The Postman.
04:28 Interestingly, Costner also said that while the flick was a flop at the box office, Waterworld
04:33 actually fared better in theaters and ended up making back its budget and some thanks
04:37 to home media releases.
04:38 Ergo, while the two movies are often tied together, their fates, premises, legacy, and
04:43 money-making potential have been very different, though it's worth noting too that the 1995
04:48 flick has its own fans.
04:50 Despite the more aquatic-oriented feature bringing in more money, it's not the one
04:54 I love more than 20 years later.
