Over the weekend Samuel Badree was one of two individuals in the sporting sphere to be given one this country's top awards- the Hummingbird Gold medal of Trinidad and Tobago. Badree who is now a Cricket Commentator, is a former Windies spinner and also has a Cricket Academy in his name with a focus on the youth.
00:00 Some knew him for his leg break bowling, others knew him for his commentary, while others know him for his knowledge in the classroom.
00:07 It's a combination of it all which earned Samuel Badri the Hummingbird Gold Medal.
00:12 Badri says he now feels even more inspired to help the youth.
00:17 I feel very humble and extremely privileged to be awarded the Hummingbird Gold Medal for my contributions in the spheres of sports and education.
00:26 It is a testament to the work that I have done and I continue to do with the young people in Trinidad and Tobago.
00:34 I feel even more motivated now to continue with that work that I've started.
00:40 And I want to thank all of Trinidad and Tobago for their support and encouragement over the years.
00:46 Badri also believes that he is a living testament that sport is a tool that can be used to achieve upward mobility.
00:53 I want our young people to understand that there are no barriers that cannot be overcome through the tenets of hard work and discipline, commitment, perseverance.
01:04 If you know of my story, you'll know of the tremendous hardships from which I come, but I was able to be successful in the world stage, not only in sports, but I also achieved success in education.
01:16 And I see both sports and education as vehicles through which we can achieve upward social mobility.
01:23 So why the focus on young people, Badri explains.
01:27 I see myself as having that responsibility, being someone who was a recipient of goodwill from so many people.
01:37 It is indeed my turn now to spread goodwill to those who are in similar need to what I was when I was growing up.
01:47 And I have that commitment to continue to work with our young people.
01:52 Apart from Badri, the other to be awarded was Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board President and Cricket West Indies Vice President as Ambassador.
02:00 Meantime, Kyle Berger, George Leacock and Calvin Inlalsing were posthumously awarded for their achievements in sport.
02:09 Leacock and Inlalsing received the Sheconia Medal Silver Award, while Berger received the Hummingbird Medal Silver Award.
