00:00 Let me begin by offering my sincere condolences to Bhai Hardeep Singh Nidja's family.
00:04 I also did so in person with his son soon after his assassination.
00:08 An assassination of a Canadian on Canadian soil in the parking lot of a gurdwara.
00:12 At that time in June and now, we call on the RCMP for a full investigation.
00:17 We call on the Indian government to act with utmost transparency in this investigation
00:21 because these allegations represent an outrageous affront to Canada's sovereignty.
00:26 Mr. Speaker, Canadians must be kept safe from extrajudicial killings of all kinds,
00:31 most of all from foreign governments.
00:33 Canadians must be protected on Canadian soil.
00:36 It is for this reason that Conservatives brought forward a Foreign Agent Registry,
00:40 Bill S.237, in November of 2021, which continues to be blocked by this Liberal NDP government.
00:46 If this bill was passed two years ago when Conservatives proposed it,
00:50 foreign agents working to intimidate, influence, and even assassinate a Canadian citizen
00:55 could have been stopped.
00:56 Mr. Speaker, we must work together to protect Canadians from foreign interference
01:01 and to ensure that Bhai Hardeep Singh Nidja's killers are brought to justice.
01:05 [Applause]
01:08 The Honourable Member for Aurora Oak.
01:10 There is worry in the community.
01:13 I had members of a local gurdwara reach out to me and say they were worried that they were on some list
01:20 that could be targeted.
01:22 And whether it's the Peel Police, the RCMP, whether it's CSIS,
01:25 I hope every precaution is being taken to make sure Canadians are safe.
01:30 The notion that someone could be gunned down at their place of worship is heroin.
01:36 Unthinkable, unfathomable that could happen in Canada.
01:40 Hardeep Singh Nidja was the president of the largest gurdwara in Canada.
01:44 He was murdered at the same gurdwara, a place of worship.
01:47 His murder was a direct attack on Sikhs and an attack on Canada's values of providing a safe
01:53 and welcome space to those minority communities who have endured unjust persecution around the world.
01:59 In fact, earlier this June, Brampton City Council unanimously decided to write a letter
02:04 to the Canadian Minister of Public Safety to investigate any potential foreign interference
02:10 in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nidja.
02:12 Canadians should have the freedom of speech to fight for human rights issues,
02:15 whether it's a Canadian or an issue abroad.
02:18 And Canadians of faith should feel safe in a place of worship.
02:22 And we will continue to fight for human rights issues, regardless of what faith you're from.
