01:46 because the moment I was waiting for had arrived, so I was a bit impatient.
01:53 I had been training with them for a long time, so I was already calm and confident enough to debut.
02:09 I remember it was a very special day for me because of what it meant, the dream I had.
02:18 To be honest, there wasn't much of a buzz about Messi making his debut with the team,
02:30 because at the time it was just a kid that came in with number 30, with a shirt that was bigger than his size really.
02:35 So when he actually came up into the first team to train, and he had already jumped teams,
02:43 because he had been in the B-side not for long, but obviously Rijkaard realised,
02:48 under the recommendation of some of the coaches in the academy, that he was a special talent.
02:53 So they decided to bring him into the first team, and at the end of that first training session,
02:58 Ronaldinho approached somebody and said, "That guy who just came in, 17 years old, is going to be better than me."
03:06 This is Ronaldinho, who was the number one in the world at the time,
03:09 but realised that there was something very, very special there.
03:12 What was it like to play with the team?
03:20 It was a very quick game, where the goalkeeper was halfway through the way,
03:26 and the ball was just about to hit the post.
03:31 Everything was given to define the game in that way.
03:35 It was a very nice moment, and the way they celebrated it with me,
03:41 and the joy of everyone, it was very nice.
03:44 Ronaldinho looked after him, and Ronaldinho wanted to give him the ball.
03:51 And then of course Ronaldinho asked him to jump on top of him.
03:54 And you could see this kid, this young Argentinian, jumping on the back of what was at the time
04:01 the best player in the world, Brazilian.
04:03 So Brazilian and Argentinian, but they got on very well.
04:06 And you could see in there that Ronaldinho had a special feeling, and still has,
04:11 for Messi, and vice versa as well.
04:13 That relationship grew, and that allowed, for good and bad reasons,
04:19 allowed Messi to learn a lot.
04:38 It was a beautiful day, for what it meant to score a goal in the World Cup.
04:45 I think it was the second game, the first one hadn't started yet.
04:50 I had to wait a while to score a goal, and it was very nice.
04:53 We played Serbia, one of the toughest defences in Europe at the time.
04:57 I think he got to the World Cup with, I think, zero goals conceded.
05:01 So that was a great game.
05:04 There were some great goals, some great football.
05:06 There was a goal that we all remember, and we touched the ball 27 times.
05:10 I think it can be a score.
05:11 Messi started on the bench, I think, and then he came on later.
05:14 And then he added to that festival.
05:17 We smashed two pieces, one of the toughest defences in world football.
05:22 But then we thought, we did OK, maybe it is fine.
05:27 Messi coming in, bringing something extra, but not at the time.
05:32 He was a good player, a very good player, but not what was about to come.
05:51 To score those three goals, that classic, was incredible.
05:55 It was beautiful to score three goals against Madrid,
06:00 for what it means, because it is a game where you see and follow everyone.
06:05 Leo Messi really changes the mood of the team, of everyone.
06:15 When you see Leo Messi in his eyes, I know how to see him.
06:20 I have known him since I was 15 years old.
06:22 I look him in the eyes and I see in his eyes when he decides to win the games.
06:29 And I see in Messi's eyes when he is able to create in the field
06:34 an absolute psychosis in the opponent.
06:38 He, like Ronaldo did, the big guy, the phenomenon,
06:41 causes fear, causes fear.
06:45 And that fear immobilizes the opponent.
06:48 He is one of the few footballers who is able to freeze the image.
06:53 It seems that the rest of the defenders don't move.
06:57 It seems as if they were frozen by the effect of Leo Messi.
07:00 Leo Messi causes that effect,
07:02 and it causes it especially in Real Madrid players.
07:16 I didn't think about anything.
07:18 I don't think about the play when I'm in a field.
07:22 You start giving and you keep giving.
07:26 You start opening up space and you find the path to follow.
07:31 And you end up with the goal you ended up with.
07:34 But it was a shame to receive the ball.
07:36 I didn't imagine anything.
07:38 What I remember is a play in training.
07:41 The boys from Barça were there.
07:43 We always mix the teams.
07:45 I was with a Barça player and I knew Messi was facing him.
07:49 And I was behind him, against the goal.
07:51 I said, "Don't go in, don't go in."
07:54 And the boy went back and back.
07:56 I said, "Stop, stop."
07:57 And when he kicked, we both kicked.
07:59 We both kicked in, both on the floor,
08:02 and I scored a goal.
08:04 If you go in, he'll take you out.
08:06 If you hold on, he'll take you out too.
08:08 So it's almost impossible to score.
08:11 I've seen Messi since the starting line-up.
08:15 When Messi first appeared in football in 2005,
08:18 in the World Cup in Holland.
08:20 We played the semifinal between Brazil and Argentina.
08:22 He was the best player in the match.
08:25 He was the best player in the competition.
08:27 Everyone saw that he was a phenomenon.
08:31 Everyone was going for him.
08:33 He was a hard-hitter and he didn't respond.
08:35 I've never seen him complain about not having a stronger attack.
08:39 That's the difference.
08:41 Everyone knows that the more you hit, the higher he goes.
08:43 So it's cool. I admire him.
08:45 The truth is that this championship, this trip,
09:04 was one of the most special in my career.
09:07 It's the most memorable, the most beautiful.
09:09 Because of what the Olympic Games mean.
09:11 Not only because we were champions,
09:14 but because we were lucky enough to win it.
09:16 Because of the experience I had
09:19 in the little time we spent in the Olympic Village.
09:22 I have very nice memories of that championship.
09:26 The Olympics were an outstanding day.
09:29 We tried many times, we lost finals.
09:32 It was special.
09:34 Bielsa convinced everybody that it was worth it.
09:38 Leo had issues with Barcelona about being released.
09:44 He managed to get there.
09:46 It was very important.
09:48 It was an outstanding day.
09:49 We won the World Cup, but the Olympic Games
09:51 is something that we really, really wanted.
09:53 In fact, our neighbours, the Brazilians,
09:55 had to wait a bit longer than us.
09:56 And they also waited for a long time.
09:58 So the Olympic football is not a World Cup,
10:01 but it's very, very important.
10:02 It was something that Leo Messi
10:05 was fundamental to achieve.
10:07 But for anybody to doubt what he's been doing for Argentina,
10:15 it's outrageous.
10:17 And I think they probably will realise when he's gone.
10:19 In a way, Argentina is living a golden era.
10:23 Because they've been in a World Cup final,
10:25 they've been in two American Cup finals,
10:28 and when you win or lose,
10:31 it's just down to little details.
10:33 He could have gone one way or the other.
10:35 Some of them, of course, were goals in extra time
10:39 or were wins at penalty shoot-outs.
10:42 So to say that Leo Messi is not doing well with Argentina
10:46 is basically not realising that they are living a special moment.
10:51 What do you think about the match against Real Madrid?
10:56 Well, it happens.
10:58 They're matches, they're played in different ways.
11:01 I also had to go to Madrid and lose by four goals.
11:05 These are circumstances that happen in matches,
11:08 that one thing or another, they're decided in that way.
11:11 And well, that time we didn't have to win like that.
11:16 It's special for everyone,
11:18 how we won at the Bernabeu,
11:20 because it was a new position for me in that match.
11:26 Because we had invented something new with me,
11:31 and we would surely be talking about all that.
11:35 Well, for sure, it's not the easiest player to stop.
11:39 You know, he has so many qualities,
11:42 and he can do so many different things
11:45 that it's difficult to find out how to stop him.
11:49 I remember that match, when the match was over,
11:53 we were on the plane together,
11:56 and I said to him,
11:58 "I've seen the best game of Leo Messi."
12:01 And he said, "No, the best game will be the next one."
12:05 But that day, you could see the faces of the people at the Bernabeu,
12:10 and everyone was saying, "For God's sake, why Messi at Barça?"
12:15 [Music]
12:23 Yes, obviously, at that moment, I thought and imagined that goal,
12:28 and well, I understood it, and thank God it came out.
12:32 It was a very important goal in every way,
12:37 for me, individually, for the team,
12:40 for how we got to the final.
12:42 The truth is that it was one of my most beautiful goals.
12:48 The truth is that at that moment, it seemed difficult
12:51 to win with my head, with Ferdinand in front,
12:55 but well, it fell right where I was,
12:58 where there was no mark, and it was just the right centre for it to fall.
13:03 [Music]
13:10 We always tried to defend ourselves well.
13:14 We had a very good team that defended itself very well.
13:17 We had Ferdinand, we had Vida, we had Patrisson.
13:20 There were players who were already experienced in football,
13:22 and we knew we would be playing with a great quality team.
13:25 At the same time, we had to defend ourselves,
13:27 but we had players to attack, like Cristiano Ronaldo, like Tev, like Rooney,
13:31 like Edson Parque, like Giggs.
13:33 So, for us, we were at the same level as Barcelona this year,
13:36 because we had already won the English Championship,
13:38 and we were also playing our second Champions League,
13:41 so we were quite confident.
13:43 [Music]
13:50 That was the moment of the game when we were on top of Barcelona,
13:54 where Tev had missed a ball, where he had crossed,
13:57 he had kicked, the goalkeeper had caught it,
13:59 we were on top of Barcelona.
14:01 At the moment, a careless mistake ended up scoring a goal in this one.
14:04 Daniel Alves' cross.
14:06 The 2009 Champions League final started really in the Clásico, previously,
14:12 because just before the Clásico, Tev Guardiola asked,
14:18 very late in the day, Leo Messi to come to the training ground,
14:23 Messi doesn't live far away from it,
14:25 and showed him some clips, some videos, and said,
14:27 "You know that space here, in between the whole of the midfielders and the centre-backs,
14:31 I want you to play there."
14:33 That was the beginning of the false nine role that he played for Barcelona.
14:37 Barcelona killed Real Madrid,
14:40 but of course, it seems to me that Manchester United had not stood that game properly,
14:44 because what happened in the Champions League final
14:47 was that Messi started on the right-hand side,
14:50 Eto'o was in the centre of the attack,
14:52 and after 10 minutes, having Cristiano Ronaldo had a chance for Manchester United,
14:58 that could have put them ahead, still 0-0,
15:01 and Tev Guardiola asked Eto'o and Messi to change places.
15:05 So Eto'o went on the right-hand side, Messi came inside,
15:08 and then he became not just a false nine, but linked as well with the midfield.
15:13 They created superiority in the midfield,
15:15 Manchester United did not know how to deal with that,
15:18 and basically that was the beginning of the victory of Barcelona.
15:24 What is it like to be the winner of a league that is so beautiful, so important,
15:29 that so many players from so many different levels have played for this league,
15:34 and to be the top scorer,
15:37 the truth is that it is a great feeling.
15:40 I think that it is a great feeling,
15:43 because it is a great feeling to be able to be the winner of a league
15:47 that is so beautiful, so important,
15:50 and to be the top scorer,
15:53 the truth is that it is a very good statistic.
15:57 I remember when I broke the record,
16:00 I was talking to Leo, do you remember?
16:02 Zara was a legend, he had an absolute record,
16:06 and he told me, "I don't play for records,
16:09 I play to have a good time."
16:11 This is a player that my generation have not seen before,
16:15 I don't think we've ever seen before,
16:18 and it's down to the consistency of his efforts,
16:21 his performances in big games as well,
16:24 the fact that he's carried a team like Barcelona to win everything,
16:28 and Barcelona have won with Pep Guardiola,
16:31 with Tito Villanova, with Tata Martino, with Luis Enrique,
16:35 and in the middle of all that,
16:37 there was one thing coinciding, and that was Messi.
16:40 So we're talking about the team that perhaps is one of the greatest in history,
16:44 certainly one that has changed history,
16:46 but again, it coincides that has Messi in it.
16:50 It was a round day, because of how everything went.
17:02 We scored the goal, the 3-2 in the last minute,
17:06 a game where if we didn't win,
17:09 we would practically say goodbye to LaLiga.
17:13 A goal that gave us hope to continue dreaming of LaLiga.
17:18 A game that we deserved to win, because of how it went,
17:22 and winning in the last minute was very special for all Barcelona fans.
17:28 For me, because he's the best player in the world,
17:32 he managed to be at the same level for 10 years,
17:37 and his level is different from the rest.
17:41 To be able to do that in 10 years,
17:44 is something very few or almost nonexistent.
17:48 Then you add the quality he has,
17:52 and you become the best in history.
18:10 I think I win everything in a game or in a player.
18:15 I think Messi is a surreal player, a player from another planet.
18:38 He's one of the greatest in the last years,
18:42 and he's so influential for Barcelona.
18:46 Impossível can do simple things.
18:55 In training, he does things that no one else does,
18:59 but in a way that he hardly ever tries to do.
19:03 I think that's what makes him different.
19:07 Messi is a great player.
19:10 The least I can say about him is that he's a man who doesn't comment.
19:17 He's an inexplicable player.
19:20 Leo Messi is a source of happiness,
19:28 happiness to a higher degree.
19:30 Here they say that Leo Messi is better than making love with your partner,
19:34 because he gives you more happiness.
19:38 That's what people here in Barcelona feel.
19:41 This question about Messi being the greatest player ever,
19:49 it's one that perhaps in 10 years' time we'll look back and say,
19:52 "Why did we even ask?"
19:55 Messi is the greatest player ever.
19:59 Messi is the greatest player ever.
