World-first 'female' crash test dummy made in Sweden  SET 50F, the world's first female-specific crash test dummy, is designed to enhance car safety for women. Tommy Pettersson, a research engineer, explained that the goal is to improve car seats for both genders. In the past, car manufacturers used scaled-down male-based dummies to represent women and children. Now, SET 50F is already in use by carmakers like Volvo in Sweden. 00:03 This is the average female, which has the shape of the torso and the hips and the pelvis of a female,

00:25 in addition to the length, of course, and the weight.

00:29 So, when it comes to geometry of the torso, we would have, for the female compared to the male,

00:38 a more narrow shoulder area and a wider hip area.

00:45 And then, of course, the distribution of mass is different throughout the torso,

00:51 which results in a lower center of gravity for the female compared to the male.

01:24 The muscles in the neck are weaker, normally, in a woman.

01:28 So, you can see, if you compare this with a human model or with a male dummy,

01:33 you can see this neck is more flexible and has more movement,

01:38 if you perform exactly the same crash test, the same speed and the same deceleration.

01:44 The aim, hopefully, is to make it possible to make better seats, both for women and men.

01:51 That's the reason why we have created one man and one woman.
