00:00 A new map showing the Philippines' maritime domain and entitlements, particularly in the
00:04 West Philippine Sea, is in the works.
00:06 The National Security Council says the government plans to release the new standard map in the
00:11 coming days or weeks.
00:13 The Philippine government previously opposed the 2023 map of China, showing a 10-dash line
00:18 that overlaps with the country's exclusive economic zone.
00:21 The Foreign Affairs Department previously rejected the map and called this baseless
00:25 since the 2016 Arbitral Award debunks Beijing's sweeping claims in the South China Sea.
00:30 The NSC says the map is now undergoing approval process.
00:34 Yes, we are seriously considering it and we already have something in the works.
00:39 This new map will conform to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and also
00:46 to the 2016 Arbitral Ruling.
00:49 At the same time, it will also possibly reflect the award, the Benham Rice Award or the Philippine
00:55 Rice Award to the Philippines, which is the extended continental shelf on the eastern
01:01 side of the country.
01:03 Maritime law experts are supporting the move to release a new map that will define the
01:07 country's maritime entitlements.
01:10 All countries issue maps but it does not become routine if you claim territories of other
01:15 countries.
01:16 If you claim the maritime zones, that's a different thing.
01:19 That's no longer routine.
01:20 That's highly objectionable.
01:23 Maritime law expert Jay Batong-Bacal adds that the new map will help in enforcing the
01:26 award and will remind the public on the Philippines' territory as an archipelagic nation.
01:32 China dismissed concerns over the new map by saying that it was a routinary practice
01:35 of Beijing and that countries should not over-interpret the standard map.
01:40 Apart from the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia and India also oppose China's standard
01:45 map.
