00:00 September 16th marks one year since the death of 22-year-old
00:04 Masa Amini in Iran.
00:06 Her death sparked protests across the country,
00:09 spiraling into some of the worst political turmoil
00:12 since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
00:15 Here's a look at the protests and what's changed since.
00:18 Protests began soon after the September 16th death
00:25 of Kurdish Iranian Masa Amini.
00:27 She had been arrested by morality police in Tehran
00:30 three days earlier for allegedly violating
00:33 Iran's mandatory Islamic dress code
00:36 and died in their custody.
00:38 News of her death circulated on social media,
00:41 sparking protests at her funeral and then across the country
00:45 with demonstrators chanting "woman, life, freedom."
00:49 The protesters targeted symbols of the Islamic Republic,
00:55 burning pictures of Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei
01:00 and chanting "death to the dictator."
01:02 Women and girls took off and burned their headscarves,
01:06 revolting against laws obliging women to cover their hair
01:09 and wear loose-fitting clothes.
01:11 Security forces restricted access to messaging apps
01:18 and confronted the protesters using tear gas, clubs,
01:21 and in some cases, live ammunition.
01:24 Rights groups said over 500 people, including 71 minors,
01:29 were killed, hundreds wounded, and thousands arrested.
01:33 Iran carried out seven executions linked to the unrest.
01:37 Authorities have said dozens of security forces were killed.
01:40 Although morality police largely vanished from the streets
01:47 after Amini's death, they returned when the protests fizzled out.
01:51 Surveillance cameras were also installed to identify
01:54 and penalize unveiled women.
01:56 Activists have also accused authorities of a campaign
01:59 to intimidate and instill fear by arresting, summoning for
02:03 questioning, threatening, or firing people connected
02:06 to the protests.
02:08 Many Iranians say the number of unveiled women continues
02:11 to grow, and that has parliament considering longer prison terms
02:15 and harsher penalties.
