00:07 1.9 billion adults in the world of age above 18 years old are overweight.
00:13 More than 650 million are obese. In Italy, obese people reach 6 million.
00:19 An impressive figure, which was discussed during the "Communicating Obesity" symposium
00:24 promoted by Johnson & Johnson MedTech in the 31st Italian Society of Obesity Surgery
00:31 and Metabolic Diseases, which took place in Naples.

00:44 there are very significant genetic conditions and psychological conditions,
00:47 so the fundamental error that has emerged and that is alive in the scientific community and in common people,
00:56 is that the obese population is guilty.
00:59 So it is time to change this perception, and allow me to say that this thing has also emerged,
01:05 that the bariatric surgeon also has the stigma of the bariatric surgeon,
01:10 because very often the surgeon is defined as important when operating a tumor,
01:15 while when operating an obese subject, he is a B-class surgeon, nothing more false,
01:21 because in laparoscopy today, as today, operating an obese patient is perhaps more difficult than operating a stomach tumor.
01:27 In Europe, since 2021, obesity is considered a chronic disease.
01:31 In Italy, this recognition still does not exist, even if the intervention of bariatric surgery,
01:36 which has been considered a taboo for years, is in the essential levels of assistance,
01:40 recognized therefore by the National Health Service.
01:44 Unfortunately, the patient who lives with obesity still lacks the awareness of suffering from a pathology,
01:52 of being ill, and therefore needs to ask for help and be able to establish a path of care with his own doctor.
02:01 Unfortunately, often the basic doctor intervenes when the situation is already dramatic,
02:06 and then at that point, bariatric surgery is perhaps recommended.
02:10 Unfortunately, this still does not happen among all doctors, especially old-generation doctors.
02:16 Bariatric surgery is a life-saving treatment that can improve the health of patients.
02:21 However, it is not just an intervention, but a real long journey that requires the involvement of many professional figures.
02:28 Training is fundamental for us.
02:31 We believe it is important to invest in the training of both the surgeon and the entire multidisciplinary team
02:37 to be able to offer the best possible treatments to the patient.
02:41 Together with Sicolo, we have developed a project called "Metec Oltre Limite",
02:46 aimed at training surgeons and their entire team to improve the ability,
02:52 efficiency and quality of care for the obese patient.
