00:00 Okay, okay, listen, you've read the title for this video about 10 tiny issues that made
00:04 you hate great recent video games, and I'm going to state this from the off.
00:09 We are going to get very, very, VERY picky today, but remember, it's just a bit of fun,
00:15 it's a bit of a tongue-in-cheekless, because at the end of the day, all the games that
00:18 we're talking about are actually pretty brilliant.
00:20 But that being said, there is one or two tiny issues that, like I say, make you sit there
00:25 and think "Aww, if only they'd fix that!"
00:28 But still, it's just a drop in the ocean of the pleasure that these titles have given
00:31 us, so let's all gather round and have some fun today as I'm Jules, this is WhatCulture.com,
00:35 and these are 10 tiny issues that made you hate great recent video games.
00:40 10.
00:41 No quitting to desktop - Elden Ring
00:44 Now Elden Ring certainly isn't the only game guilty of this, but it is the one that's
00:48 been pissing countless PC players off with it as of late.
00:51 For reasons that remain rather unclear, the PC version of From Software's otherwise
00:55 incredible action RPG lacks a simple 'quit to desktop' option in its menu.
01:00 Rather than pressing escape and being able to quit the game with a single click, you're
01:04 forced to quit to the main menu, sit through the two splash screens, wait for the online
01:08 connection to load, and only then can you finally exit the game.
01:11 It can take around 20 seconds to do what any PC game should let you do in no more than
01:15 one or two - terminate the session and get on with the rest of your day.
01:18 Now, it might sound like a true nitpick, and yes, that's really what this list is all
01:22 about like I've said, but it's also a minor annoyance that becomes a deeply irritating
01:26 one once you've sunk dozens or even hundreds of hours into this thing over innumerable
01:30 play sessions.
01:31 For such a wonderfully polished game, it's a bafflingly clunky piece of UI design.
01:36 9.
01:37 Too.
01:38 Much.
01:39 Talking.
01:40 Pokemon Legends Arceus
01:41 Pokemon Legends Arceus has been a surefire critical and commercial success, though that
01:46 didn't stop many fans expressing frustration at Game Freak's decision to absolutely
01:49 bombard players with reams of dialogue.
01:52 The early hours of this game in particular are absolutely exhausting with the unrelenting
01:56 avalanche of NPC chit-chat thrown your way, much of it from boring characters who fail
02:01 to deliver information in concise or entertaining fashion.
02:05 As fun as the core tried and tested Pokemon gameplay is, getting through those first few
02:09 hours of stamina-sapping lectures from NPCs, none of whom are voice acted, is a real test
02:15 for your love of the franchise.
02:17 If we're being honest, nobody really cares about the plot of Pokemon games, so keeping
02:20 it light and breezy is definitely the way for Game Freak to go.
02:23 Instead, for all of the things that it got right, the start of this game was a sheer
02:27 endurance trial.
02:28 8.
02:29 The Annoying Photo Mode Watermark
02:31 Resident Evil Village
02:33 Now pretty much any AAA game worth a damn launches with a photo mode these days, and
02:37 Resident Evil Village was no exception.
02:39 It's admirably pretty barebones as photo modes go, with the player locked into their
02:43 own first person perspective and unable to freely move around the lushly rendered environments,
02:48 but the biggest slap in the face of all of this is the decision to include a Capcom watermark
02:52 in any photos you take.
02:54 Beyond the fact that this passive-aggressively imparts a sense of ownership over the images
02:58 from Capcom, it also requires players to add an extra step of manually cropping the watermark
03:03 out, wasting their time and making photo mode a lot less fun in the process.
03:07 PC players were in luck at least, as within two days of the game's release, a mod was
03:11 created which removed the watermark, but no such luck for console players.
03:15 It may seem like we're splitting hairs, and let's face it, I don't have many to
03:17 begin with, but given that the majority of photo modes don't bother with this watermark
03:21 nonsense, it does feel like Capcom is being rather over-aggressive here.
03:25 7.
03:26 The Awful Voice Acting
03:27 Forza Horizon 5
03:29 Forza Horizon 5 may well be the greatest racing game of the last five years.
03:33 It is gorgeous, it is absurdly entertaining, and it gets almost everything right.
03:38 But those who play the game's story will unfortunately have to contend with its toe-curlingly
03:42 poor voice acting from basically pointless human characters.
03:46 Like most racing games that ill-advisedly attempt to staple a cinematic story onto the
03:50 racing shenanigans, both the over-enthusiastic voice actors and cringeworthy writing are
03:55 more than an impediment to the fun.
03:57 Many also complained about the game's various Mexican and Latinx characters semi-randomly
04:01 dropping Spanish words into their dialogue in a way that just wasn't realistic or authentic,
04:05 seeming to suggest that developers Playground Games hadn't done their cultural homework.
04:10 While some may find the overall goofy vocal performances charming, and they're certainly
04:13 not a surprise to anyone who played Forza Horizon 4, it's a single damning strike
04:17 against a game that is otherwise such a breathtaking achievement.
04:21 6.
04:22 It Takes A Bit Too Long
04:23 It Takes Two
04:25 It Takes Two was one of 2021's most acclaimed games, scooping Game of the Year accolades
04:30 at both the Game Awards and the DICE Awards, with many praising its ludicrously entertaining
04:34 co-op multiplayer gameplay.
04:35 And indeed, It Takes Two is an absolute blast to play with a friend, whether they're an
04:39 expert gamer or somebody totally new to the medium.
04:42 The problem is, though, is that ultimately, it's a bit too long for its own good.
04:46 Given that developer Hazelight's previous co-op multiplayer adventures, Brother, A Tale
04:49 of Two Sons, and A Way Out were both fairly bite-sized stories clocking in at less than
04:54 six hours, it was quite surprising to see how comparatively epic It Takes Two turned
04:58 out to be.
04:59 For most players, it takes somewhere between 10 to 12 hours to clear the game, and while
05:02 it absolutely provides a lot of bang for your buck, many felt that it was just too much
05:06 of an ask for a game centred around co-op gameplay.
05:08 For starters, most adults have pretty busy lives, where it can be tough to set aside
05:12 this much time to play a game with a friend, especially with all of us having wildly differing
05:16 schedules.
05:17 While if you're playing with a less than experienced gamer, or perhaps a total non-gamer,
05:21 that playtime would become massively prohibitive.
05:23 Though there are those who certainly praised the length as ensuring greater value for money,
05:27 the surprisingly beefy playtime also meant that some players may have taken months to
05:31 find a friend, and the time to actually beat it.
05:34 5.
05:35 The Peter Parker Redesign
05:36 Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered
05:39 Fans of Insomniac Games' Spider-Man rejoiced when they announced that a remaster was on
05:43 the way for the PS5, only to get a rather unpleasant surprise when it was actually released.
05:48 As gorgeous as the game looks in shiny 4K on the PS5, many expressed irritation at the
05:52 developer's decision to change Peter Parker's face model to a different actor.
05:56 The official party line from Insomniac is that they wanted a model whose facial structures
06:00 more closely resembled Peter's voice actor, Yuri Lowenthal, as this would make it easier
06:04 to sync the voice work with the facial capture.
06:06 But that wasn't really good enough for many fans, who were irked that the original Peter
06:10 had been given a sudden and rather distracting design change.
06:13 Some even went so far as to suggest this was done to make Peter more closely resemble Tom
06:17 Holland's MCU Spider-Man, which he certainly does.
06:20 It was a minor/major bone of contention for many revisiting the game on PS5, and with
06:25 the redesign carrying over into Peter's supporting role in Spider-Man Miles Morales,
06:29 it was a sticking point there as well.
06:31 4.
06:32 Dialogue Getting Interrupted – Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy
06:35 Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy was one of the most pleasantly surprising games of
06:39 last year in a lot of ways.
06:41 Unlike Square Enix's colossally disappointing The Avengers, it was a rip-roaring adventure
06:45 that felt absolutely worth its namesake.
06:48 It wasn't the most ambitious game in the world, but offered up an entertaining single-player
06:51 experience with a surprisingly nuanced story and great dialogue throughout.
06:55 It's a shame, then, that the game's dynamic dialogue system often results in entertaining
06:59 and intriguing lines of chatter being cut off midway because a trigger in the game prompts
07:04 another character or event to interrupt them.
07:06 Considering how unexpectedly strong the writing in this game is, it's frequently irritating
07:10 that dialogue will routinely be cut off unless you're basically just standing still.
07:14 While developers Eidos Montreal were clearly trying to replicate the naturalistic ebb and
07:18 flow of real-life discussion, it often robbed players of a chance to savour and hang on
07:22 to every line of written dialogue.
07:24 It's not the end of the world or anything, but it sure is annoying.
07:27 3.
07:28 The Missing Songs From The Original Releases – Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 & 2 HD
07:34 Fans of the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater franchise were ecstatic when Activision announced that
07:38 a remaster collection of the first two games in the series was coming their way.
07:42 But that excitement was dimmed slightly by the follow-up revelation that not all of the
07:46 game's original soundtracks would reappear in the remaster for boring legal or contractual
07:50 reasons.
07:51 While Activision did, to their credit, secure almost all of the original tunes along with
07:55 a bevy of new ones, many players still noted the absence of tracks such as 'Committed'
07:59 by Unsane, 'B-Boy Document 99' by The High and Mighty, and 'Out With The Old'
08:03 by Alley Life.
08:04 While this has no bearing at all on the quality of the gameplay or the visuals, it does ever
08:09 so slightly undercut the nostalgia-laced appeal of that original soundtrack if a couple of
08:13 songs are missing.
08:15 2.
08:16 Aloy's Terrible Hair Physics – Horizon Forbidden West
08:20 Horizon Forbidden West is certainly one of the best games of the year so far, a thrilling,
08:25 supremely polished AAA action-adventure game that nevertheless has been bugging players
08:29 for one reason above all others, and that is Aloy's damn janky hair.
08:34 The game as a whole is so richly, eye-wateringly realised, especially in 4K on PS5, that its
08:39 less refined elements stick out like a sore thumb, and nothing more so than Aloy's distractingly
08:44 iffy hair.
08:45 Aloy may be as beautifully rendered as anything else in this game, but her hair is a chaotic
08:49 nightmare.
08:50 During gameplay, it'll frantically clip through not only herself, but her weapons,
08:54 armour, and basically everything in the vicinity.
08:56 In other cases, Aloy's hair will move about in unrealistic ways, flowing balletically
09:00 around even when she's inside an area with no apparent drafts, making for some ridiculous
09:05 moments.
09:06 This was admittedly also a problem in Horizon Zero Dawn, so it's not massively surprising
09:10 to see it again, even if many nevertheless hope that Guerrilla might have ironed things
09:14 out for the new-gen sequel.
09:16 Hair is undeniably one of the trickiest things to get right in games, but in this case it's
09:20 so damn noticeable as to outright distract players from the mesmerising experience that
09:24 is unfolding around them.
09:26 1.
09:27 No Japanese Lip Sync on the PS4 Version - Ghost of Tsushima
09:31 Ghost of Tsushima is, in many respects, a fantastic game.
09:34 A gorgeous open-world samurai adventure, bolstered by incredible combat and a cinematic story.
09:40 But many complained upon release that while the game allowed players to swap between English
09:43 and Japanese audio as they prefer, all of the cutscenes are still only synced to the
09:47 English audio.
09:49 This felt like a colossal oversight for a AAA game from a major studio, and many understandably
09:54 expected Insomniac Games to patch it in at a later date.
09:57 But this never happened.
09:58 And though the PS5 version of the director's cut did indeed include lip sync for the Japanese
10:03 dialogue, PS4 owners of either version were left to go without.
10:06 As for why something as elementary as lip sync was only available on the PS5?
10:10 Well Sucker Punch's creative director Nate Fox claimed that it was because the PS5's
10:14 SSD allowed them to render scenes in-engine, which were pre-rendered videos in the PS4
10:19 release, where it simply wasn't viable to include large video files with lip sync for
10:23 both languages.
10:24 While this explanation makes sense to an extent, it's still a massive disappointment that
10:28 a game so thoroughly about Japanese history and culture doesn't even present its characters
10:33 in an entirely genuine way across all platforms.
10:36 Many saw the decision to tether it to the PS5 release as effectively sticking the true
10:40 rendition of the game behind a paywall.
10:43 At least with any possible sequel likely to release as a PS5 exclusive, they shouldn't
10:47 run into the same problem again.
10:48 And there we go my friends, those are 10 tiny issues that made you hate great recent video
10:53 games.
10:54 I hope you enjoyed that, and please let me know what you thought about it down in the
10:56 comments section below.
10:57 Like I said before, this is just a bit of fun, a bit of tongue in cheek, this list.
11:01 So don't go thinking that I'm telling you that the games we spoke about today are
11:03 bad in any way.
11:04 I enjoyed pretty much every single one that I've managed to play.
11:06 But still, hope you enjoyed it, and if you want to chat to me further you can do so over
11:09 on Twitter @RetroJWithA0, or you can swing by Live and Let's Dice where I do all of
11:13 my streaming outside of work, and it'd be great to see you over there.
11:16 But before I go, I just want to say one thing.
11:18 Hope you're treating yourself well my friend, both physically and mentally, because you
11:21 deserve all of the best things in life alright?
11:23 And do not let anything or anyone else tell you otherwise.
11:26 You are a massive ledge alright?
11:28 Now I want you to go out there and absolutely smash it today.
11:30 I believe in you.
11:31 As always I've been Jules, you have been awesome, never forget that, and I'll speak
11:35 to you soon.
