DepEd sets guidelines on cancellation or suspension of classes
Transcript
00:00 Some students and parents can help but feel dismayed over the delayed declaration for the suspension of classes in public and private schools.
00:08 Let's find out what the debit guidelines are in suspending classes in times of heavy rains and floods.
00:14 Kenneth Paciente tells us more in this report.
00:17 Students are back to school for school year 2023 to 2024.
00:23 But along with the opening of schools is the rainy season.
00:27 That's why May, who has a child in elementary, always waits for the local government announcements on class suspensions.
00:34 However,
00:35 But what are the things to consider in canceling classes?
00:56 Based on the Department Order No. 37 of the DepEd,
00:59 The Department Order says,
01:07 Classes are automatically cancelled in areas where public storm signals 1 to 5 are raised.
01:12 But if classes already started, it is up to the schools to cancel classes and send students and school staff home.
01:19 The decision on the cancellation of classes is up to the LGU if the weather is bad, but not caused by a typhoon.
01:25 Classes are also cancelled in areas where Pag-asa raises yellow, orange, and red rainfall warnings.
01:31 And if there are no such warnings and heavy rainfall is experienced, class cancellation is up to the LGU.
01:38 In time of flooding, if Pag-asa issued a flood warnings, classes are cancelled.
01:43 During earthquakes, there will be no classes in areas where earthquake intensity scales or magnitudes 5 and above are issued by the PHEVOCS.
01:51 If the quake or tremor is intensity scale 4 and below, the decision rests on the LGU.
01:57 And if there are damages to any school structures, school principals can cancel classes.
02:03 Students should have make-up classes and asynchronous learning should be implemented to ensure students are still learning even at home.
02:10 If a school turned into an evacuation center during a disaster, these turnaround should not exceed 15 days.
02:17 The DepEd also stressed that parents and guardians are still responsible for their children going to school even without a LGU-declared class suspension.
02:26 "For us, we are not waiting for it because we know that it's bad for our children."
02:30 "I am not stealing, I am just making my children go to school. It's hard. A lot of students are going to school."
02:36 Most LGUs in the NCR cancelled classes at all levels in private and public schools today due to torrential rains.
02:44 Kenneth Paciente, for the Nation.
