00:00 One of the biggest enemies of the marmots is the royal eagle.

00:04 The alarm is sounded, but some marmots are not ready to react.

00:17 It is called the roof of the world.

00:29 Expanding over 2.5 million square kilometers,

00:32 these high plateaus have an area equivalent to a quarter of China,

00:36 making it the largest and highest plateau in the world.

00:42 At these heights, winters are so rough

00:49 that a creature prefers to spend half of the year hibernating up to 10 meters underground.

00:55 The Himalayan marmot.

00:58 In spring, this domestic cat-sized rodent emerges from its burrow,

01:10 ready to devour the equivalent of a year's worth of food in just six months.

01:15 These social creatures live in colonies, reaching up to 30 members.

01:25 During the hottest months, they optimize their time on the surface

01:30 and play fighting and their favorite pastime.

01:49 But life on the plateau is not just a matter of pleasure.

01:54 Marmots must remain aware of the danger.

02:06 Predators are legions.

02:08 And many of them have put the roving spiegel on their menu.

02:23 Its wingspan of more than two meters allows it to fly hundreds of kilometers in search of its prey.

02:34 With a wing that is as long as a man's arm,

02:39 it is capable of flying up to a height of up to 20 meters.

02:44 With a visual acuity five times higher than that of man,

02:47 it can spot a marmot more than two kilometers away.

02:51 The alarm is sounded.

03:12 But some marmots take a long time to react, and the eagle takes advantage of it.

03:18 The royal eagle is not the only predator on the plateau.

03:32 There is another, much bigger.

03:41 The Tibetan bear.

03:43 A subspecies of brown bear.

03:48 This shy and lonely creature hikes the meadows to restore its reserves for the winter.

03:55 And although the plateau offers it a crowd of large prey,

04:08 the Tibetan bear has a preference for meals on the push.
