00:00 The coast of Telok Pahang, where thousands of fish were reported killed by the recent
00:06 algal bloom, has been found to be lacking in oxygen to sustain marine life.
00:12 The Environment Department said in a statement on Wednesday that tests taken at waters near
00:18 the affected fish farms found the samples do not fulfil Class II of marine water quality
00:24 standard to support aquatic life.
00:27 Meanwhile, the Penang Fisheries Department will continue to take samples periodically
00:32 to monitor the density of the algae in waters off Telok Pahang, which has been experiencing
00:39 a red water phenomenon since August 24.
00:43 In a statement, the department said preliminary results of the analysis carried out by the
00:49 Batu Maung Fisheries Research Institute found that the algae is non-toxic.
00:55 It said a very high density of phytoplankton cells in those waters can cause fish to die,
01:02 especially those in cages, due to decrease in dissolved oxygen.
01:08 The department said a similar situation had happened in Kuala Gula, Perak in 2016, which
01:14 had caused fish in cages to die.
01:18 The department has also proposed a number of mitigation measures for fish cage farmers
01:23 in the affected areas, such as immediate harvesting of all market-sized fish if there are signs
01:30 of drowning or death.
01:32 It said fish cage breeders are also advised to reduce the density of fish in cages and
01:38 monitor the dissolved oxygen content.
