00:00 teaming up to transport seven tons of tins to those who need it most.
00:06 KMFM's Tons of Tins.
00:09 Our sister station have raised thousands of pounds and collected thousands of items to donate to food banks in Kent.
00:16 People could either drop donations off, donate online or get their food shop delivered to KMFM HQ.
00:24 I think the thing with food is that if you just took a minute to go, what would it be like today if you didn't have anything in the cupboard
00:34 and you had no money to go and buy something.
00:38 And I think that if you put it like that, added to it that there are so many people using food banks right now,
00:44 including people that you probably know.
00:47 The partnership with UK Harvest and Southern Water aims to provide as many tons of non-perishable food as possible,
00:54 but the team couldn't have imagined the response they got.
00:58 It's really when you do things like this at a radio station, you've got to remember, we're sat in a room, we don't see anybody there.
01:06 But when you're saying to somebody, please can you help us with something, you have no idea where that's going to go.
01:14 And so I was on a breakfast show with Chelsea and we opened the mics at like 10 past nine one morning and I said,
01:22 look, this is what's going on. This is what's happening.
01:26 If you can just give us a couple of quid and then just give in, Paige.
01:31 Went through the roof and they raised £5,018 in total.
01:37 That money funded a huge food shop across Kent supermarkets and is still arriving at charities doors,
01:44 ready to feed the three million UK households who have used a food bank in the past year.
01:49 And Rob knows himself what an impact it can have.
01:53 I've been donating personally to food banks since just before the pandemic because one of somebody I know who's got a full time job
01:59 was having to use them to feed his family.
02:02 And I was like, this is just insane. So hopefully it's encouraged people to think about filling up,
02:08 you know, even just the front bit of the trolley with a couple of tins every week.
02:11 And if you've got the money to do it.
02:13 So after weeks of asking one hundred and ninety one thousand listeners,
02:18 KMFM have managed to gather up nearly seven tonnes of food to donate to local food banks.
02:24 They say it's crucial to helping families struggling through the cost of living crisis.
02:28 And they've managed to gain so much support because of their huge reach here in Kent.
