00:00 Timothy did come by the set and then said I should have been in this.
00:04 And I was like I know, why aren't you in this?
00:07 Greta Gerwig has revealed some major stars who almost appeared in Barbie.
00:11 In a recent interview with Hollywood First Look, the 40-year-old director
00:15 revealed she asked her Lady Bird and Little Women stars, Timothy Chalamet and
00:20 Sharrose Ronan to make cameo appearances in the record-breaking film.
00:25 But Greta revealed why it wound up not happening.
00:28 You know you were a wonderful collaborator with Timothy and Saoirse.
00:32 Yeah I was like kind of hoping in some way.
00:35 I know I know I tried to get them both in it. I did. I tried to get them both in it.
00:39 I really did and they both couldn't do it. Although Timothy
00:42 did come by the set and then said oh I should have been in this.
00:47 And I was like I know, why aren't you in this? And Saoirse too.
00:51 It was like a scheduling thing. She was actually producing so that was great.
00:55 Good on her.
00:55 The filmmaker went on to admit that she felt like she was missing her quote
00:59 "children" by filming Barbie without them.
01:02 But I was like I tried to get them. It makes me it makes me feel like I'm without my they feel like
01:08 my children.
01:09 Timothy and Sharrose weren't the only actors who couldn't make Barbie fit into their schedule.
01:15 The film's casting directors revealed in July that Saturday Night Live comedian Bowen Yang,
01:20 Schitt's Creek actor Dan Levy, and Dear Evan Hansen star Ben Platt were all in the running
01:26 to play versions of Ken in the film. But scheduling logistics prevented the castings from happening.
01:32 Jonathan Groff is also said to have been up for the role of Ken's long-suffering friend
01:36 Alan before Michael Cera landed the part.
01:39 The film starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling has crushed the box office since its opening
01:44 weekend, becoming Warner Bros.' highest grossing domestic release since The Dark Knight in 2008.
01:50 And grossing more than $1 billion globally, which makes Greta the highest grossing woman
01:55 director in history.
01:58 The film also made history as the biggest debut ever for a film directed by a woman.
02:03 Access Hollywood chatted with Greta at the Los Angeles premiere earlier this month,
02:07 and she opened up about some of the biggest misconceptions about Barbie
02:11 after giving her opinion on fan theories.
02:13 This is like very, very major. Is it surreal for you being here? I'm sure.
02:18 I am so, I'm starstruck right now. I'm so starstruck. So yeah.
02:23 You've got your own film, which I love.
02:24 Yeah, I mean, by everybody, the actors, but also all the musicians. I can't, it's outrageous.
02:32 They just keep coming. It's insane. I love that you're channeling Barbie Pink tonight.
02:36 Are you channeling like a specific Barbie as inspo?
02:39 Yeah, director Barbie. I'm director Barbie. That's right.
02:43 Director Barbie is the greatest Barbie that I've ever seen.
02:47 I need to know. I don't know if you're on TikTok. I don't know if you're familiarizing
02:50 yourself with the fan theories, but there's a lot of theories going on. And one of them
02:55 is that America Ferrera is wearing black and white all over the press tour because it's like
02:59 the reverse of the Wizard of Oz. Like when Barbie comes to the real world, it's neutral.
03:04 What do you think about this?
03:05 Well, first of all, I have to say traveling the world with America and Margot,
03:09 they just both look so incredible every day. So all of it, I'm always like you and you,
03:16 what's going on? But I mean, I will say America is amazing in the movie. She might be bringing
03:23 a dose of reality to Barbie. So we'll see.
03:26 The teaser we didn't know we needed. Okay. I love, I know you talked about when you were
03:31 growing up, your mom wasn't really like a huge fan of Barbie. So I just wanted to know,
03:35 what do you think the biggest misconception is about Barbie and how are you really changing
03:39 that with this film?
03:40 Yeah, well, I guess since the time I was a little girl,
03:44 I knew about Barbie and I knew the arguments against Barbie in the same breath. I knew
03:49 the whole thing. And I think mostly just that like, you know, the icon that Barbie is,
03:55 her interest, what's interesting about her is her complexity, not her perfection.
04:00 And I think that's what we try to really dig into with the movie.
04:04 I love it. Last question. Fans are already calling for Barbie 2 before the first one's
04:08 even out. That's how hyped up this is going. What do we think about that?
04:11 We got to get this movie out. We got to get it out. We're going to see it in theaters
04:15 and then I'll, then I'll, then I'll think about what's next. But right now I'm just like,
04:19 July 21st, baby.
04:22 Fair enough. And then this is such an all-star cast, but also so many cameos.
04:26 Is there a favorite cameo in the film?
04:28 Yes, but I'm not going to tell you.
04:33 Secret, secret. Okay. Love it. Thank you for your time tonight.
04:37 (upbeat music)
