00:00 Global music media brand Billboard is coming back to the Philippines. The newest
00:04 edition will be launched in October with the goal of creating unique content that
00:08 will help take Filipino music to the next level.
00:11 Billboard has long been recognized as the voice of authority in music charts,
00:15 reviews, events, news and information in the music industry. Well joining us now
00:20 are the creative people behind Billboard Philippines. We have editor-in-chief
00:23 Brett Jackson, editor-at-large Francis Reyes, executive producer Paolo Valenciana
00:28 and podcast producer Anton Molina. Good morning everybody. Hey good morning.
00:32 Hey, morning guys. How did we you know get this team together? It's like the
00:37 Avengers came together and came and formed this you know super team for
00:43 Billboard. Let's talk about how this team just came together Brett.
00:47 Definitely we are super blessed with the people that are sitting right next to me
00:53 right now. Yeah. Every one of these people their reputation speaks for themselves. I
00:57 mean you have Paolo Valenciana who's you know award-winning director of most of
01:01 the concerts happening here in the Philippines and shows and then you have
01:04 Kiko Reyes here that is used to be the previous EIC of Billboard coming back
01:09 now and Anton that's been in radio for over 10 years. Yeah. Just bringing all
01:13 that magic to where we are now. Okay tell tell me exactly about your roles. Let's
01:18 go start from Paolo over here. Paolo. Okay so I'm stepping in as executive
01:25 producer for the media channels group. So we are developing shows, live
01:33 performances, probably some events in the down the line. But we're really
01:38 creating a platform for these local artists to be seen and heard by the
01:44 global audience. So that's what we're that's what they got me to do and I'm
01:48 really really excited because you know I've been I've been in the industry for
01:52 almost 15 years. Yeah I mean all of you have been you know all your pillars. Well let's not jump over Anton over here.
02:03 So as a podcast producer I'm in charge of creating everything from you know
02:08 thinking of ideas for the show yeah do the execution of the show from pre to
02:13 post broad and then we're hoping that the podcast would be a platform for our
02:19 local artists you know to share their stories and things about their music.
02:23 Okay. My role is editor-at-large and being the oldest guy. Let's say most
02:32 experienced. That's always a good one. Yeah. Yeah I mean the thing with
02:37 something like Billboard I mean Billboard historically has always been
02:41 about what's happening now. Yeah. Right. It's it's about it's about youth. So my
02:48 contribution would be like the first couple of editorial meetings you know
02:53 these young writers had these questions and then they asked me you know is
03:00 there is there anything they're probably missing out on. So I was like oh no no
03:07 your questions are great how about this. Right. So I'm trying to bridge the gap
03:14 between their their youth their their perspective on things which is always
03:20 about now and and what's gone. Right. Right. Right. Right. The voice of experience.
03:26 Brett. Yeah I'm taking on the role of editor-in-chief and you know it's just a
03:33 blessing really. We really have a great vision for Billboard Philippines overall
03:39 and that would be to connect Filipino music and the world. Well you know
03:43 Billboard is such an important brand obviously for music in general and I'm
03:48 sure all of all of you all of us you know grew up with it in one way or
03:53 another and this is sort of the Billboard of now what is Billboard gonna
03:57 be all about now. I mean you're still top 100 it's gonna still be there. What is it
04:01 the top 20 international 100 all that. It's still the the pillar of you know
04:06 music the music scene and music reviews and to talk about what music is all
04:10 about now. No I definitely agree you know everyone knows Billboard for
04:14 eye-catching covers we're definitely bringing the print magazine here we are
04:17 the authority on what's happening in music but other than that it's gonna be
04:21 so much more. Right. Like Paulo said it's gonna be events we are producing a lot
04:25 of new types of programs for music so this will be an all-around platform
04:29 that not only for the discovery of music but for the rediscovery of your legends
04:34 and icons and also reaching out to the other regions of the Philippines to
04:38 really put the spotlight not only on Manila but the whole Philippines as a
04:41 whole. It's a dawn of a new era you see how I worked that one in. Let's talk
04:49 about the mission though I mean it's the authority on music but really the focus
04:54 is on the Philippines on OPM and and how we can bring you know our we just had
05:00 this great interview with EZ Mill you know and we are there on the world
05:03 stage what's the what's the marching orders from here how are we going to
05:08 bring Filipino music to to the world? Well like I said earlier we're really
05:15 planning out some in my opinion on great world-class content yeah and we and
05:24 anything and everything that's print that's events, shows, podcasts. Yes and and like just
05:29 recently you know a group like SB19 for example yeah who just won an award from
05:35 Billboard and they're being exposed now to the American audience and they're
05:39 being well received and and we're very excited because we feel that there are
05:48 so many local acts who deserve that kind of recognition and growing up watching
05:55 Gary Vee, I was always thinking, how come Filipinos, you know, they don't they don't make it like the way the other acts do, the other countries do. For me this is really close to my heart
06:11 being able to to help our industry in this way. Yeah I mean it really is and now
06:17 is this I don't know we're in this golden time where the spotlight is just
06:21 the gate has been you know opened and we are just ready to to walk in and
06:25 speaking of that let's talk about what's in the Maiden Issue what can we expect?
06:29 Secret. We thought this question was coming. It was a good idea not to serve you guys coffee you don't deserve anything for that lack of information come on what are appetites a little bit what's you know give us a little bit of a teaser what can we expect?
06:47 Well really what you can expect from the Maiden Issue is just a huge surprise
06:53 really what we're gonna be bringing of course is that meaningful content
06:58 purposeful media and just spreading a message to the world through what we're
07:03 doing but yes we cannot say anything and we really want everyone to be excited for
07:09 what's to come. Well we are we are excited but obviously the the Maiden
07:12 Issue is what's on everybody's mind but in terms of long-range plans and you know
07:16 you touched on that obviously the the grand plan is to just bring Filipino
07:20 music to the forefront but Kiko you know what can we expect in terms of just the
07:25 long-range big-picture plans for Billboard? Well this this may sound a
07:32 little too grand but if... No such thing nowadays man come on. Yeah because you
07:40 know the whole thing about Billboard like I mentioned earlier it's it's about
07:44 now and and and what's now is going to be history tomorrow. Yeah. So and well
07:54 personally one of my frustrations is if if I want to find out about say Pinoy
08:00 rock from the the 70s it's hard to find those resources so we have to bring some
08:09 some of that into Billboard Philippines but the the most important thing is in
08:13 the future no one's gonna go so um who's Easy Mill you know yeah you're 2023 you
08:22 know it's that that's the role that's the role of Billboard now it's gonna be
08:26 the chronicle of what's happening now and just sort of this this amazing you
08:30 know book that the chronicles the history of Pinoy music and well hell it
08:35 all started here today awesome work guys thank you again to
08:39 Brett Francis Paolo and Anton for joining us this morning you guys earned
08:42 your breakfast now. Thank you so much guys. Thanks for coming in.
